Turkeys and chickens. What an arcnode does is extend the range of your caster's spells, as long as they are not engaged. The usual tactic is run the arcnode jacks up front, then have your caster channel any spell through them. Since a caster's spell is normally between 6-10 inches in range, that means a turkey or chicken running up 12 inches can give you a theoretical range of 18 to 22 inches, depending on the spell. Of course the jack must be within the caster's control area.

Aside from Khador, I also have a friendly Privateers list.

Bart
2 Mariners
1 Mule
Master Gunner MacNalie
3 Sea Dog Deck Guns

Sometimes I switch it around:

Bart
1 Mariner
1 Mule
Dirty Meg
Freebooter
Doc Killingsworth
Master Gunner MacNalie
2 Sea Dog Deck Guns

I use this to play against new players. It's got lots of range but for the Steamroller Scenarios, it's not that competitive.

If you like Heldiver model, use it and say it is Deathripper. :) Either Helldiver or Deathripper has gun to shoot with so both look close combat orientated. But yeah, Turkeys with archnode are very usefull (again, no idea of do Montenebra have any good spells to arch but probably she has).

Uuh, that looks shooty! 6 shots from ?Jacks and 3 from deckguns! And when enemy gets near, pop Typhoon and watch them fall or retreat to get even more shooting! :D

I have Bart with 2 Mariner and Freebooter, MacNaille and Meg Marshalled Buccaneer. But I probably get Nomad and other Freebooter so I could try out "axe to face" Bart. Using Batten Down the Hatch to keep jacks alive and then when close enough charge and get jacks aroused (well, that is the plan. Problem is to get Bart charge first).

Yeah very shooty list. But again, not efficient for the SR scenarios. The second list is actually better for SR.

That's the problem I see with BDTH. If Bart charges and manages to Rouse, he can't use BDTH effectively as the jacks won't be able to charge. If he doesn't go first, then you need to spend focus for his jacks to charge. I guess it can still work but I find it more tricky to use.

Unlike my shooty list where Bart usually goes second and can afford to use BDTH in the situation where my jacks will be charged.

I like to the Freebooter to be marshalled because I find it becomes very efficient, becoming a pathfinder, adding +2 to MAT (which is great when it charges with Off Road) and Meg can basically decide to boost the damage instead of the attack.

For Menoth, probably the best 'Jack caster is actually Amon Ad-Raza.  I'd take him, 2 dervishes, and a castigator or a reckoner.

'Siege' Brisbane is another really good caster for Jacks in the Cygnar list (Darius is also good, but if you don't like the model...), especially with a very shooty list.

Don't play cryx, can't really help there.

regular butcher is a decent Jack caster (and much less expensive than Karchev), but for pure mangled metal, it's really hard to beat Karchev.

Thanks for your help on this guys. I guess, if I get into this, my list will consist of Mortenebra, Leviathan, two Stalkers and a Helldiver, and I will drop one Stalker or the Helldiver depending on the game. I could live with some of the Zombie Turkeys but only if I can change the heads at least. I wont start with them, but could add them later.

This should give an interesting and unusual list.

I don't really see Butcher as a jack caster, mainly because his spells list and limited focus mean he makes better use of them for himself. True his feat turn means jacks will deal a lot of damage but the problem of any jacks is trying to make its attack roll and with a MAT5, it's 50-50 to hit other jacks unless your opponent is Khadoran or some of the other merc jacks.

On the other hand, Kodiaks and Devastators and maybe even Berserkers can work with the Butcher. These three are the more efficient of Khadoran jacks when it comes to focus utilization and attack performance.

I just find that for Khador, Karchev and Vlad would be the better picks for jack control.

Good luck with your list and your hunt for good deals on eBay.  I haven't seen how Mortenebra plays on the table yet but I do know she's Cryx first jack caster and from what I have read, her spells are effective for jacks and then some.

As a follow up, can anyone give me an idea of how the forces play? I am not so interested in Khador, and I have Cryx info, but what about the other three? I am looking for a force that allows good combinations of abilities, but is flexible to play with to allow me to change my play style if I want (using mostly just a change in Jacks). Which of the three remaining races gives this?

Thanks.

Cryx is the most flexible I think. Cygnar is also flexible enough. Menoth plays infantry heavy. Mercs, well they're mercs but they can win given a good player and the synergy of Pirates infantry is really very brutal. Speed and hard hitters FTW.

Thanks. I guess that while I really like the Cryx force, I wanted a second force (since they are small warbands anyway) that had more typical Jacks. I swung back and forth between Cygnar and Menoth, but dont really like the Merc Jacks. I think that I have decided on Menoth as I like their Jacks a little more, and I will probably just play Mangled Metal as the other game types currently dont interest me so much - although that could change later.

So, here is my 'probably the least effective force but I like the models' list:

Harbinger
Castigator
Guardian

:D

That Menoth team looks great on table, fine looking models every one of them!

IMO Harbimboer could really use Devout light jack, Devout can protect big Harby from enemy fire and attacks. But then again, Harby takes so many points that it could prove impossible to field more than 2 Jacks with her. ?

One strategy I can think with Harby could be trying to get her close to enemywarcaster, then BURN the enemy with divine anger (she got spell called Catalysm that REALLY burns enemies at close range). Or get close and personal and hit enemy with sword, then hit him again, then again, and again, and again, and again, and again... She has 10 focus, so 10 extra attack if she wants to... Or just 5 but with fully boosted damage.

One sneaky thing that can be done with Harbibarbi is that you can _throw_ her with Castigator at enemy (amazing KiteGirl of Menoth cant be knocked down what normally happens when you throw somebody). Then hit enemy with sword, and again, well you know. Or BURN enemy.

Actually, I have Harby model myself. I think I shall order few Jacks for her to try out!

Hi

If anyone is thinking of getting into Warmachine/Hordes I would highly recomend starting with the Battleboxes/Warpacks. These all give you 1 Warcaster/Warlosk together with 2-4 Warjacks/Warbeasts. This will work out as about 300-320 points. Not exact for doing 350 points Mangled Metal but perfect for learning the game.

I have been playing my Cygnar Battlebox over the last couple of months vs Khador/Cryx/Menoth/Merecenary Battleboxes. These have all been interesting, fun games. They are also surprisingly tactically challenging. Even for experienced players.

I would always starting with Battlebox before going for Mangle Metal. Also cheaper- you can often pick up a brand new Battlebox off ebay for little more than ?20.

Hope you enjoy it.

Cheers

James
