Sorry to see you leave an aspect of the hobby, pg!

More time for Epic, AE-WWII and Aeronef :-)

I basically stopped playing Warmachine a year ago and concentrated on Hordes and when the new expansion came out I got the same sinking feeling I did when I was playing Warmachine. Namely that I was on an unending treadmill that would require me to devote a lot of time to the game to stay competitive.

It is the same reason why I stopped playing CCGs. **love** the Vs. CCG but I can't be bothered to learn all the new cards every three or four months.

Warmachine started to seem like schoolwork to me and not gaming.

Thanks for comments. Now I am even more tempted :)

I'm glad to hear that it is playable with those battle groups boxes, have to pick up couple someday.

It is excellent fun to play with battle boxes. I personally like WM/H very much and prefer games of 350pts-500pts games. It is a skirmish game and rules really work best with few minis on table at a time.

Also models are really sweet (even though many are pain to build) and that is what got me hooked first time. :)

So I really suggest to give it a shot. :D

Reasonably popular around here, but all the stat cards everywhere looks messy and unappealing to me.

Around here it's popular to keep them in a small business card holder book or for storing sports cards... keeps 'em all in one place!  *laugh*

Since most games are played on a 4'x4' battlefield, I use the, usual, empty 2'x4' area to keep my cards spread out in "toploaders"

Well actually yeah they do use those holders and it still looks messy to me, cos rather than just a rulebook (like epic), you need all this other junk... kinda like earlier editions of epic I suppose (e40k, SM etc)  :D

Yeah, like dices, rulers and templates. (And rulebooks, and printsheets from internet, and broken/march/overwatch markers, and blastmarkers, and DC markers, and and and....) :)

Cards are much easier to keep at hand than allways changing rules in net. :p

I don't think it is at all. Hordes perhaps but WM starter set games are horrible

Really?  A couple of 'Jacks and a 'Caster, what more do you need?  *laugh*

Or just play 350 point games if you want "low investment" costs.  I'd recommend picking up the "Faction Deck" of whichever Faction catches your fancy when you pick up the main rulebook as it has the stat cards of, essentially, all the current models in there for you to review.

The issue is the game balance. WM starter set games are usually quickly determined by who can get their Feat pulled before the other player.

Starterbox is great point to Start, could be boring after hundreds of maches if no-one gets new figures...

Then if you want to keep it simple, play Mangled Metal (caster and her/his jacks) at 350 points (or 500). Great game like that.

Just in case Salute doesnt offer me enough distractions this year (wargames con in London)... what would be the good/only(?) Mangled Metal forces at 350 points for Cryx and Cygnar?

I have had much fun with Deneghra (from startbox), Deathjack and 2 deathripper (from startbox) and one nightwreched (you can use defiler from startbox and tell your opponent that defiler is now nightwreched). Deathjack could lose his mind and eat you, but hey: Risk and Reward!

Other could be dropping Deathjack and use Slayer from startbox and add another nightwreched, that would be startbox + blister of nightwrecheds. Lots of boneturkeys, but they are fun!

From basic book I would only use Skarre and Iron Lich in Mangled Metal, because Skarre need own infantry to sacrifise to be efective.

About Cygnar... I dont know. I dont play with them, yet.

Cygnar in Mangled Metal?

Well, Haley + Lancer, Charger, and Ironclad (starter Box + Haley) is pretty good, but the best Cygnar casters for mangled metal are Darius and Epic Nemo (who requires a 750-point game)

Darius is almost a 'Jack himself, and his feat rebuilds your Jacks *completely*, even if destroyed.  Very nasty if you run him with a couple light jacks (I like 2 Hunters for MM) and a couple heavies (Centurion and Thunderhead or Defender) not sure about total points cost, don't have my stuff with me ATM, but that should be real close to 500.  Thunderhead and Darius are a bit of a pain to put together, but PP has a good set of tutorials that you can download.

WM or Hordes is not just about who can get his feat off early. Sure when one starts it seems that way but veteran gamers can basically place his models so as to be able to survive a feat and then counter attack.

Khadoran player here though i also have Privateers. For the Motherland!

If you'll look at my comment it was specifically about Starter Set battles and I can assure you that it is the case in those types of games.

Its the prime reason why I didn't touch the game until the first expansion came out.

Larger games with different unit type and using the Steamroller scenarios is definitely a much different game.

I tried it a couple of times and was nearly - but not quite - sucked into it.

My main issue with it was that while it was an enormously tactical game, it was game-tactics rather than troop-tactics. Rather chess-like thinking ahead - which is pretty cool. But they all revolve around points and feats and the warcaster. Not so much outmaneuvering the enemy but keeping all my special rules in order.

I don't know. The reason I resisted it when it started was that I still worked for GW and I'd rather get as many models with my discount before I left the company rather than paying full price for something new. So now, I might be more tempted. Then again, I've less money these days and those GW Cads still seem to be getting money out of me. I'm thinking about a gothic fleet, which is a very bad idea.
