Ok, reading a short story made me think, how many different ways could there be to assault from space? 1: Drop Troops (Grav Belts) - SciFi version of Airborne Troops 2: Individual Drop Pods (Think Traveller?s Half Rock type) 3: Drop Pods (aka Space Marine) 4: Drop Ships (Drop and scoot like Aliens) 5: Drop Ships (True Landers) 6: Teleporters (Star Trek or Terminators) Am I missing any? dafrca |

Vehicles that operate in orbit and in the atmosphere. SM Land Speeders and Tau-style support craft, for instance, can drop from orbit straight into combat. |

Space elevators. Big thingies which are, literally, elevators to orbit. they'd have to be captured intact of course! A different version - the skyhook - could be deployed instead - this is similar to the elevator, but it's not tied to the ground; instead, it's played out off an orbiting satellite. Vulnerable, too, I'd guess. A way to assist the assuault would be by infiltration, hijacking expected landers, or using Genestealer cult methods. ![]() ![]() |

Hi Dafrca, I think you are missing the SUPER-mecha that can travel equally well in space and in an atmosphere. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. |

If you could secure a relatively safe landing zone then space ships landing might also be possible. Of course that'd depend a bit on how large the ships are and how sturdy they are built (Flimsy "realistic" space ships probably wuldn't be suitable but "star wars" or BFG style "Battleships might do the trick.) In the end it laso would probably depend on tactics. A heavy prepatory bombardment might be enough to silence defences long enough to make a decent to the planetary surface. Cheers! ![]() |

Hi, That reminds me of the "Beanpole" from Traveller 2300. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. |

Yep, the 'vietnam' method (used in an attempted POW rescue). Crash-land an assault ship on the defender's head, and use the ship's guns to blast surviving defenders, and assault anything still standing. I disagree with the Grav Belts, though. Re-entry would fry anyone not in an ablative capsule. Also, Orbital Elevators/Skyhooks would be pretty vulnerable to attack. |

Re-Entry is not what burns you up, it is the speed that you re-enter at. Sort of the old joke about the fall is not what kills you, it is the sudden stop at the end. dafrca |

What about the Nid version where you dont actually land any troops at all...you just land seeds (or spores in Starship Troopers, or eggs in Aliens I guess...) and grow your army on the target planet. |
