Just curious, who has tried VSF?

If you have, what scales and types? 28mm Skirmish to 2mm massed combat.

If so, what did you like or dislike about it?

Oh and to answer my own questions:

I have, I played a Sword and the Flame with home grown veriations in 15mm, Gaslight in 28mm, and played Space 1889 as an RPG with some large skirmishes.

I loved the overall feel, but disliked the lack of support at that time for wargames. Today that is very different. Lots of figures available now.

In my case, I'm so far only into the modelling end, although I have rules for Aeronef and Ironstars(1:1200) as well as Gaslight (28mm). I'm also looking forward to Land Ironclads and Aquanef, both by Wessex (of Aeronef fame), and both 1:600, or 2mm scale, and have started building up a small collection of Land Ironclads. Finally, I own Hammerin' Iron II, which is a set of rules for 1:650 scale ACW riverine warfare - not quite VSF, but I'll probably change the setting to a fictitious one and add some weird stuff. I LOVE the Peter Pig models for this  :D :D :D

I dabble - Russian fleet for Aeronef, some Scheltrum Miniatures which are quite nice. Ruleswise GASLIGHT I enjoyed the most (although you have to feel your way). Tried England Invaded (not quite victorian) and didn't like it.

Ah yes dear Chaps, I recall VSF Now. ?That would be the mass of lead sitting aorund me at the moment, and my decent into insantiy....

Aeronef: French, Anarchists and Germans (Digs) painted, Russians, Brits and Turks waiting for attention. ?My first introduction into VSF

Playtester for Land Ironclads - Briitsh and Prussian armeis in development with a small but growing Russian force as well

Playtester for Aquanef but sadly no fleets yet. ?I want to do some conversions of based on the Navwar 1/1200 ACW ships (like Vs) but would prefer to find a good supplier of proper gunboats and Ironclads in that scale. ?Anybody know of any?

And I am trying desperately not to further descend into the madness....in 15/18mm VSF. ?I love the Black Hat range and with so many options available in 15mm for conventional troops its hard not to be sorely tempted. ?I prefer it to 28mm though there is more VSF specific stuff in that scale. ?

Ruleswise I have heard good things about GASLIGHT oin that scale and that is probably where I would start though having playing Sword and the Flame I can see that working well too. ?Space 1889 is a lovely background, but Im not a fan of the rules for larger battles I think it would get a bit bogged down.

Having said that, I (like V) do far more modelling and painting (and buying!) than playing. ?But I enjoy it greatly and it is a very different feel from anything I have done for ages and has rejuvenated gaming for me personally. ?I havent painted anything seriously (more than a few figs) but VSF for over 6 months.

So far, what I have seen is that the majority of full on wargame rules used are "add ons" to existing historical rules. In the 28mm skurmish and RPG areas there seems to be more rule sets though. Thus what you have planed is what I think most VSF fans do.  :D

Welcome to the boards.

You should post some pictures of your fleet. We all LOVE pictures.  :laugh:

As for England Invaded, I agree, it just didn't capture my imagination the way some of the others did.

Tas, for the ships, the one person I know who has done the most with the ships has built 99% of his own using thin sheet balsa wood and small bitz.

He has a great fleet with both tons of real and fictionalized ships.

On the other subject..... Just join the madness and it will seem normal quickly.  :devil:

It had some nice figures though.  The Brit Sgt was excellent

Sad to say this person is someone I met at the local cons. As of the last time we spoke, he has not gone "Digital" and has not taken and photos. I will try and remember to take my camera the next time.  :D
