This is the former USS Tuscaloosa, now La Fiamma (the flame) of Venice.
Any Venetian would recognise the 'CX' emblem on the hull - it refers to the 'Consiglio dei Dieci' (Council of Ten) which were originally a legislative body but ended up effectively ruling Venice.

USS Tuscaloosa? I might be wrong, but shouldn't that be CSS Tuscaloosa?

In any case, nice work, V. Very creative use of historical minis for sci-fi.

Who care what those crazy Americans called it, for now, it has reached a much more glorious station in life as La Fiamma.   :p

Hi Dwarf - apparently, it IS USS. Can't say why, but that's the only ref I found.

V just to be clear, it is a CSS. It was built and used by the South and thus would be the CSS.

Specs:

CSS Tuscaloosa

Casemate ram
Dimensions:  length 150'-170', beam 34', draft 7'
Displacement:  500? tons
Speed:  2 ? knots
Crew:  120
Armor:  4" casemate
Armament:  One 6.4" Brooke rifle, three 32# smoothbores
Authorized:  1 May 62

Tuscaloosa: Similar to Huntsville. Built at Selma AL. Launched 7 Feb 63 and taken to Mobile for completion. Commissioned fall 63. Used as floating battery due to poor engines. Provided men for boat expedition to Pensacola FL Apr 64. Exchanged fire with Federal recon flotilla near Mobile 15 Aug 64. Sunk 12 miles above Mobile in Spanish River to prevent capture and block the river 12 Apr 65. Some sources replace the Brooke rifle with an English Blakely rifle, but this seems unlikely. Commander: Cdr. Charles H. McBlair (late 64). (?)

coo! Fancy that. In my ref it's listed as USS - but no details are given. Must be a typo, then. it DID look Southern, mind you - the Virginia-like look is a bit of a give-away.... :)

Thanks for the info Dafrca - and aplogies to DS for my St. Thomas act :(
PS - hey Dafrca, where is the info from? Interesting!  :D

I might be growing old, Mojarn, but these ships are so strange and the models so nice I just couldn't bring myself to modify them. ?:( Remember the Imperial Man O'War ships we'd traded ages ago? It's the same with those - and, incidentally, I'm feeling really happy I hadn't painted them back then. Although they belong to a different age, they too will probably wear Venetian colours - along with my Bretonnian and Dwarf fleets!

Well, I took the specs from a listing of all the CSS Ironclads. The photo from a website discussing the attempt to raise her from the river and restore her.

In any case, I found her listed in a few lists of CSS Ironclads.
