Sorry if I am going off some deep end. ?

Sorry? this is FUN!  :D  :D  :D
Dafrca, I was never one to limit the expectations of what we could do (if we put our minds to it), and I'd expect great changes on the 'local' (i.e. our solar system) scene. But I'd bet a bucketload of Titans that in one-hundred years time we'd only have sent unmanned probes travelling at not more than 50% the speed of light to the stars. Pity I won't be around to collect.....  :p

(IMNSHO) Hands down one of the best "near future" sci-fi settings I've run across so far is Steve Jackson Game's "Transhuman Space" setting:

http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/transhuman/

Set circa the mid 23rd century it has memetic warfare, nano technology, gentic engineering, strong AI and fairly realistic space travel.

To me it's what Traveller would/could have been if it had been designed in the 1990s rather than the 1970s.

Of course my fav near future Sci-fi is the Slammers ... but no surprise there ! :D ?G/W's fluff is weak to me ... but I play Epic anyway ! :alien:   I like DS9 the best of all the Star Trek series !  Like the Slammers, it's grittier, harder, more "realistic" (if I can say that !) ...  :;):

Absolutely.

Other settings don't even come close as being realistic projections of the future (unless they assume some sort of technological apocalypse).

I hadnt heard of Transhuman Space before, I'll have to check it out.

L4 - what we like are the stries and penmanship in Slammers. The stories could be set in almost any universe and we would like them IMHO, because of the authenticity of the author

That's true Tas ... but I do like the "fluff", if you know what I mean ...  I can see myself commanding  a Company of skimmer mounted infantry or M9 Cbt Cars !  Not in the IG or SMs ... in a world that includes touches of Nazis, Commies, Medieval Europe, Ancient Rome, etc. !      The Slammers are a much more "believable" version of the future, IMO ...  :;):

Oh come on L4, we all know the Slammers do not need ortillery Support. :p

Serious though, Ortillery Support is one of the areas that seem to be missing from most SciFi games or if it is included it is so useless, players do not seem to use it.

That does look quite interesting. Too bad it is GURPS. I just can not get into GURPS.

I will have to find out if someone in the local area has it and would let me read it.

Thanks

SM1 Off Board Support (OBS) Rules = Ortillery ! :;): We used it every time, even if it was just a Haywire missile ! :D ?We made it a point to take/buy some ! ?Our standard "package" would be 75% on Ground troops and 25% on CAS and OBS ! If we used Titans; 33% on Titans, CAS and OBS ... we fight combined arms ! ? Used those "tactics", with all armies, Save 'Nids and Tau since they are SIB.  However based on Tau rules, and they have no Titans (but the Manta is close !), we'd give them 33% CAS and OBS ...  But now with the proliferation of Aircraft, we're talking 33% across the board for CAS, OBS and Titans !

Yes, while reading it. But at this point I am not willing to buy the book new just to see if it is a setting I would like.  ???

But if I get it from someone to read and find it is a book I want, well then the GURPS material will not stop me from owning it.  :D
