" As stated by L4 when talking about the original AT moving into range and just shooting made for a very dull game so he is sort of contradicting himself here, shooting a target at range is more realistic "

Not a contradiction ... But ... A misunderstanding of the way we employ Titans. We use Titans as Heavy armed & armored Mobile Weapons Platforms. To support the conventional ground forces in a battle of maneuver & fire/fire & movement/Combined Arms Mobile Warfare.

Again, I'll use the Warship paradigm. The Warship(s) destroy [along with airpower and possibly coastal batteries] Enemy naval vessels. As part of the mission to support the ground troops. And destroying enemy vessels i.e. gaining fire superiority. And frees up other Friendly vessels to provide direct fire support to the ground units.

Once all Enemy naval vessels[Titans] are no longer effective. Then all the Friendly naval assets[Titan(s)] can continue to support the ground units.

Again, these tactics could be used with any version of AT/Epic one plays. But if AT8mm only has Titans(?), then just use the "Naval Battle " paradigm ... or "OK Corral" ... I was always a Wyatt Earp fan !

Well having thought about it ... to assuage JZ's concerns and others ... For more accuracy & clarity. Just replace everywhere I wrote Battleship ... to "Warship" ... So that covers all bases ! :D

And again, we believed Titans were similar to Warships.

Imperator = "SHBB" - like the IJF's Yamato and Musashi ... The only example I could find ... ^-^

Warlords = BB or BC

Reaver = CL, CA, HC

Warhound = DD

Just the way we see it ... nothing official from GW, FW, etc. ... 8)

Battleships and Epic? Two of my favourite things. What type everything is depends upon what era, so basing this on Great War

Imperator: Superdreadnought. The biggest afloat.
Warlord and Revear: Battleship. Forms the main battleline.
Warhound: Battlecruiser. Can act independently of the main battleline and enough firepower to destroy everything except other titans.
Knights: Cruiser. Can act as independent scout but retreats against anything bigger. Otherwise, supports the main battleline, cannot act independently of it.
Techguard/Skitarri and Robots: Destroyers. Cannot act as scouts, cannot stand up to titans but in specific situations as amass enough firepower to cause damage if get within close range.

Yeah, that's a good comparison.

I also like moredakka's parallel to the Napoleonic era. Colorful uniforms, shooty infantry blocks that occasionally charge into combat, cavalry with swords, artillery… the paper-scissors-rock aspect (and colors) has always made it a popular era for wargaming, so it’s no wonder 40k didn’t deviate too much. Of course, that means making weapons fire about as ineffective as it was in the early 19th century. That requires either not thinking too hard about it, or overthinking it. The latter is more fun!

I think the point was rather if it was WWII, all tanks would be as accurate as a rushed T34 from the tractorfactory during the siege of Stalingrad, crewed by raw recruits drunk on methanol...

As an Ork player, that seems about right for my tank crews...

Regardless ... I'd say Epic generally is more like as I said, a hi-tech WWII than Napoleonics ... But I'd imagine that would depend on what version is played, the players' styles, and maybe even knowledge of Military History, etc.
But I'm sure we've all seen, e.g. SM2 being played by "the kids" looking more like "Disneyland" than an actual war game ... :D

Clearly, WWII battleship analogy snugly negates the need for 6 or, for that matter, 2 or 3 mm minis seeing as the tables would become quite embiggened. I find the Nappy analogy excellent. If not Napoleonic, then perhaps at least pre dreadnought? At least the French certainly had flamboyant dress code up til then.
