Well thank goodness that has finally happened. The wait was the worst part! ;)

Pfft! The community hasn't used GW in years. TacComms organises the tournaments, TacComms provides rule books and play testing, TacComms provides links to 6mm suppliers.

We've lost nothing. So my response is 'meh'.

What we really need is a generic ruleset with armies for all the existing 6mm ranges. We have Exodus Wars, Future War Commander and Strike legion. What we need are army champions for each of the game systems (or one chosen system) who will create army lists for each faction / producer.

It sounds like you are suggesting Polyversal, essentially. Thats fine, and could be a viable solution. But, there is nothing WRONG with the EA rules, they have had considerable development, and they are familiar to the most people.

Personally, I think that what we really need is for this place to be expanded and developed better, and to maybe look at developing a set of 'proxy mini lists'. So, for each range within each line, give a set correspondence to an existing GW list on a one-to-one mapped basis. For example a Space Marine Rhino would be 'x' in the Pax DRM line, 'y' in the Edenites EW line, etc.

netepic wrote:
Again is that an issue? Plenty of people to privately fund websites. The EPICente has been funded by myself since 2005. CyberShadow privately funds TacComms using his vast vault of gold coins.

Ah yes.... THAT 'vast vault of coins'! I think that chocolate in them is starting to melt, though! ;)

It's not an issue as along as the GW legal team don't come calling demanding 'their' files are removed.

We never needed GW to host the files, but I'm sure it didn't do any harm.

GlynG wrote:
This is my only concern, occurred to me a while ago. If GW corporate/legal wanted to be dicks (on the grounds of protecting their IP and reducing distraction/confusion from their 40k range) they could issue legal notices forcing the taking down of the NetEA and NetEpic rules.

The community could then either fold, or possibly host them somewhere abroad which doesn't protect IP laws. Looking into a backup plan along those lines would be a good precaution for the Epic-UK, NetEA and NetEpic teams.

That is a legitimate concern. GW wouldnt be dicks to ask for this to be removed. If everyone put up their own copies of the game, and some had minor edits, there would be confusion for everyone, especially for us.

If it did happen, the community wouldnt fold, but we would need to work on reformatting and this would be a setback.

I do think that work on reformatting the lists in a more significant way should start now, before its a big issue and needed.

Apocolocyntosis wrote:
This probably won't change the price as much as when the line first started to be pulled. Anything that didn't sell out within a couple of weeks was low demand anyway.

Should not change lists to reflect available models. There are no officially available models. Could make sub-lists to work with other manufactures stuff though, e.g a Khazari list and a Squat list.

The only real loss here is that some new/returning players may have found the rules again via the SG site, as Meph mentioned. More casual initial browsers might stop if they see the rules are gone.

Agreed. The minis have been OOP for a while now. This isnt a major step or the reported 'death' of Epic. Its another small step in the wrong direction.

Still sad. Has every specialist game a dedicated communite like epic? I hope so.

Man i hope i do have every PDF for BFG. I have tournament on sunday. 12 players! Biggest BFG tournament in the world! :D

Most of the SGs have pretty dedicated communities. Blood Bowl players are fanatical, and have their own online league stats and tables and are very organised.

BFG does have a very strong community following, and only currently lacks direction and organisation. The other games are not as strong in this regard, but still have their own focus points on the web.

And, I do have every PDF that was on the GW site. In fact, some of you may remember the last time the GW site was updated and a few files were lost..... Some of those that went back up were from me as I had a better backup of the site than they did. ;D

Could NetEA do army lists for other backgrounds or corporations miniatures?

I'm sure SCP wouldn't be alone in supporting this endeavour.

With regards to legally protecting the rules, NetEpic are on confirmed safe ground with that right? So potentially NetEA could follow their lead?

There is no confirmed safe ground. That said, they have operated for many years and never run foul of any system, so thats about as safe you can ask for these days.

Introducing a new 'shared background' into the game would be a viable option, although it may hack off the 40K purists (do these people exist?). In theory, this has always been possible.

A shared background would upset purists on both sides. But with army lists for all companies you could do the 6mm version of the Star Trek vs Star Wars mashups that Full Thrust players get to enjoy :D.

I would have no objection in principle to lists for Kraytonians or TEF or Edenites or whatever, however one of the main draws for me is the link to the WH40K universe, warts and all.....

I enjoy playing a game where a particular narrative can emerge based on existing background ("oh this game is going to be awesome, Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists hate each other and always have brutal games") how do the blood angels feel about the Andrayadas? I don't know (I'd be very interested to find out what the necrons think of them... ;))

For me it would be like taking the rich and diverse universe of Star Wars and having the starship enterprise leading a fleet of xwings in an attack on babylon 5....

personally I find epic as it is to be a perfectly good game.... is it worth asking permission from GW to host the rulebooks somewhere? at least we know, I mean I have a PDF copy and will happily pass it on to anyone who doesn't... is that legit?

I have to admit that I like the idea of a NetEpic style project for a new E:A rulebook, but I think the constantly developing, organic nature of the lists would preclude them being added as they'd be obsolete within a year or so.....

I'm rambling now.....

also, given the nature of the community here, I honestly don't think we could get enough people pulling in the same direction for long enough to actually get a E:A:Redux rulebook finished and agreed on.... we can barely get army lists approved, let alone an entire re-write of the rules! ;)

I agree with kyuss, i love the 40k background and the whole grimdark gothic fluff that comes with it. That's what i have bought into ever since first edition 40K with the heresy period always being a favorite after the release of Adeptus Titanicus. I still read an occasional BL novel and still collect the Imperial Armour books.

As for new players looking to get into epic and hopefully discovering this forum i feel that some clarification foe visitors on the different versions of the game and sub-versions for that matter could/would be a great help. We have 4 official version of the game from GW plus all the fan developed updates and alterations not to mention a legion of army lists under development for various versions of the game too. It all gets a bit confusing really especially for new blood.

I really feel that some sort of sticky listing all the various versions of the game and what section of the forum to go to for the game you are interested in would be a wise move. Alternative rule sets could also be listed for those looking for a more generic option.

6mm players are getting rule set overload these days with many older rules sets still in use and even more alternative sets released or under development from various sources. In fact it's all getting a bit fragmented really.

Just my own thoughts after reading thru the various comments here.

This is exactly how I feel. It would also be helpful if there were short descriptors for each game including mechanics, online support and other relevant info so that people know a bit about each game without having to read every rules set in full.

Sorry to veer off topic a bit, but geez I reckon GW would make a massive killing if they did a smaller scale wargame set in the Horus Heresy (not necessarily a 6mm epic reboot), even if they insisted on doing it as a one-off box set along the lines of Space Hulk or Dreadfleet.

The whole epic nature of the Horus Heresy fluff is so fantastic, and so clearly suited to large battles that can never be properly done in 28mm (with out being a millionaire and hiring out a school hall), that why GW refuse to utilise the awesome HH IP to its full potential is hard to comprehend. I drool when I imagine how incredible the Forgeworld HH stuff done in a smaller scale (in plastic) by todays uber talented sculptors would be.

I'm absolutely certain tonnes of nostalgic ex-GW wargamers (like me) turned off by the juvenile unbelievability of 40k and Apocalypse, but who love the whole HH background, would be all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake.

Alas, I know I'm pissing in the wind .....but one can dream.....sigh

We Don't need GW to keep Epic alive ... we've been doing it for years here already ... AND there is no shortage of companies producing 6mm Sci-fi models and of course there is always eBay for you purist fan-boyz ... :P >:D ;)

If only there was a rule set heavily based on the E:A mechanics that existing armies could directly be ported and used in without any significant effort and that a quick 5 minute explanation of equivalency an E:A player could be going. One in which many of the nagging issues of D6 (in)balance, unit abilities, and of course from a company without sue happy lawyers existed? ;D

True, but it didn't harm anyone that the rules were on GW's site, and getting new players will be tougher. The "It's a dead game" statement just got more traction, when the games publisher no longer has it on their website it's hard to argue against.

I have to say that at no time have I ever felt that epic was fully supported by GW, even when on general release, it always played second, third, probably fourth fiddle to other games in the ranges. This Tac Comms community, along with current mini manufacturers has been the best thing that's happened to epic. GWs enivitable 'cutting of the cord' doesn't concern me. All I need is here. I can understand the argument for lost new bloods coming in from the GW site, but was it really that many? Surly most come to know epic from their friends. As for legal concerns, GW hasn't said anything so far and is therefore unlikely to now. Even if it does Net E:A can be rebuilt by its players (netepic style). Rant over :D
