My experience of 6mm blogs is that few people rely on GW these days and most enjoy being able to buy custom units that they can convert to match their own interpretation of the fluff.

Thanks Tom, but NetEA has already got its own site. If you want to link to it though that would be appreciated.

I wonder if GW 6mm minis will go up in price, or will people mostly switch to other manufacturers.

This probably won't change the price as much as when the line first started to be pulled. Anything that didn't sell out within a couple of weeks was low demand anyway.

Should not change lists to reflect available models. There are no officially available models. Could make sub-lists to work with other manufactures stuff though, e.g a Khazari list and a Squat list.

The only real loss here is that some new/returning players may have found the rules again via the SG site, as Meph mentioned. More casual initial browsers might stop if they see the rules are gone.

so that's it, they're finally dead......

I have to say this makes me very sad, rediscovering epic was a great joy to me, and driving to WHW to collect panic-bought orders on many a rainy lunchbreak was a happy time

it was only in the end that I realised just how many great minis actually existed and the awesome work GW had done on the entire SG range.... :wah

It's sad but as said not unexpected. It doesn't change anything as they haven't really supported the game for years and basically been unavailable for the last one. I'm with Tom on this.

Ultimately it comes down to a need for a Plan B.

Pfft! The community hasn't used GW in years. TacComms organises the tournaments, TacComms provides rule books and play testing, TacComms provides links to 6mm suppliers.

We've lost nothing. So my response is 'meh'.

Hi!

Epic as a GW thing has been dead to me for 17 years.

All this means is a very belated confirmation of that.

Besides with Exodus wars, DRM and Onslaught, I don't really care or need GW anymore. ;)

Again is that an issue? Plenty of people to privately fund websites. The EPICente has been funded by myself since 2005. CyberShadow privately funds TacComms using his vast vault of gold coins.

We don't need a company to provide web hosting.

What we really need is a generic ruleset with armies for all the existing 6mm ranges. We have Exodus Wars, Future War Commander and Strike legion. What we need are army champions for each of the game systems (or one chosen system) who will create army lists for each faction / producer.

Hi!

Listen to netepic on this.

His been the Net Epic's project best friend for a very long time as its web portal and maintainer for all those years.

We have been proving for 17 years that as long as you have people interested in a ruleset, it can be maintained and even developed further depending on the want and whims of its community.

The onus to cary epic forward is on "us", GW no longer is part of the picture.

Yes... Valid, we can't upload GW files but we have NetEpic, NetEA and a plethora of other 6mm SciFi rulesets.

Hi!

Well, this is a subject I can speak to with some authority. ;)

The physical representation of any ruleset is protected by copyright. So yes, you cannot have PDF's available of the original book legally.

However game mechanics are NOT copyrightable.

What does this mean?

That if those interested in E:A were to sit down and write the book from scratch, use their own images and photos, assemble it and make it available you are in good LEGAL territory.

This what Net Epic has done this for 17 years and now has a gold version that was professionally laid out by WMN and illustrated by graphic donations of many people.

Is it a herculean task? Of course it is. Nothing worthwhile is easy. But IF you want an E:A rulebook, totally updated and sporting whatever army lists you've created (as well as rule amendments added), the you'll have to roll up your sleeves and do it YOURSELVES. :)

If we (net epic people) could do it I see no reason why E:A players could not do it as well.

Hi!

A current process and effort called "net epic platinum" is already doing this as we speak. :)

It was only a matter of time after they stopped selling the models, no-one should be really surprised by this.

It's not an issue as along as the GW legal team don't come calling demanding 'their' files are removed.

This is my only concern, occurred to me a while ago. If GW corporate/legal wanted to be dicks (on the grounds of protecting their IP and reducing distraction/confusion from their 40k range) they could issue legal notices forcing the taking down of the NetEA and NetEpic rules.

The community could then either fold, or possibly host them somewhere abroad which doesn't protect IP laws. Looking into a backup plan along those lines would be a good precaution for the Epic-UK, NetEA and NetEpic teams.

OK, that's good. It means that this might actually allow more freedom in how the list writers diversify and create new units.

I am a new/returning player as I haven't played a game of epic in about 16 years. I initially went to the GW site for epic. I think I found this forum linked through warseer or some other place like that(possibly kyussinchains?). It honestly wasn't that easy to find a good 6mm community at first.

I do think there will be some loss of new players through online searching, but at the same time those players who do find a place will find something much better than just a set of downloadable rules. Although I am struggling to find the beginners guide to epic/6mm scale gaming around here, I am still figuring things out.

Can you explain more about net epic platinum? Google searches seem to only turn up cards from 'Hearthstone' and stuff like that.

GlynG. If GW pursued legal action I think it would be more of a frustrating hurdle, that will mean name changes and art asset replacements, rather than any long term effect.
