Many countries legal systems consider linking to Torrents the same thing as hosting the torrents yourself. Thus all the big court cases as Torrent database websites are shut down one by one.

So the site admin is well within his rights (and indeed, is being very sensible) to be asking that Torrent links are not posted on his property (website).

Note that those torrent databases host the torrent file. They don't go after sites linking to torrent files. Linking to a torrent file being piracy is just idiotic. If you want to find torrent links, go to your nearest search engine like google... *roll eyes*

Several UK indexing websites (sites that only contain links, no hosting) to illegally distributed material have been shut down over the years. Idiotic or not, it's what happens in the UK.

While I sincerely appreciate the frustration involved here, I dont really think that posting on website A about how badly someone has been treated on website B is particularly beneficial. In addition, clearly this is a matter between you (Erik) and Bill over at TMP.

The ownership of a file allows a person to host and make this file public. Making this file available for public consumption does not necessarily pass on the right of anyone to similarly host the same file. This came up with SG archive rules a while ago. GW wanted to make certain rules available, but wanted this to (a) drive traffic through their site [which also meant that they could see the response on the community at a course level through download figures] (b) wanted to control how these rules were distributed and © wanted control of content. For example, if a third party decided to mirror the rules, who could say if they were actually the same rules as intended, or if changes had been sneaked in.

I am afraid that, as you have mentioned, the web is not a democracy, as much as this may be an interesting idea. Essentially, you sign up to a web site and you agree to play by the rules of the owner, and potentially follow rules that may change over time.

I cant comment on the fairness of a ban or otherwise. In addition, I will close this topic, not through any judgement on the case as stated, but because I dont think that this is particularly productive, and I want to avoid any mis-interpretation of 'TMP v TacComms'.

My suggestion is to either create a new account and move on at TMP, coontinue to request clarification from Bill, or just take the Dwarf philosophy of shrugging, moving on and never going back to TMP and making a footnote in your own Book of Grudges.
