I mucked around with it for a bit and ended up deselecting the boxes that were ticked for "Disable BBCode" and "Do not automatically parse URLs" - these are indeed in the "Edit Signatgure" section. I have no idea what either of those things mean, but I don't care so long as it works! Thanks for the tip off!

spiders did help build the web - they're the bots that crawl websites to build search engine indexes!
I bloody knew it!!! I'll be having a word with the naysayers who denied that spiders were weaving a very tangled web of super-fast information.
Glad that you got this sorted out. For information....
'BB Code' is a special set of tags used by Bulletin Boards (forums) to tell it how to display text or perform specific actions. The [url] command is one example of this. The square brackets are only used by forum software and the 'URL' tag tells the web browser that its a link to a web page.
The 'url parsing' converts the web link to a clickable format. Its not always a good idea to turn this on, as some places have web pages that will automatically 'be clicked' and take you somewhere undesirable. But, since there are not many places less desirable than here (
and that we are all pretty trustworthy individuals here) it s fine to leave activated.
As for spiders, they actually have their own category on these forums to give them access to the boards and help them to identify threads and pages so that they get indexed in search engines. They usually come up as '[bot]' in the user list, and are 'Chaos Spawn'.
