So anything posted on taccom might now get reposted or linked to facebook (I realise that is sort of the case with anything, anyway, but still)? can we have some sort of automatic opt out from that? :P

get off my lawn, etc ;D

I don't like Facebook or Twitter at all, and I don't use them. That said, I think that using them as a means to attract more members on the forum is a great idea, and one which is definitely worth pursuing.

The only thing that I think needs to be monitored is that none of these resources end up diverting activity away from the forum. Assuming that they're just going to be transmitting forum content to a wider audience though, I don't see this being a problem.

@Apoc: How do you mean opt-out? Ask that links to your posts don't get put on a fb page? If it is, I don't quite follow why that would be a concern. All that would come of this would be that there would be a link sending people to your posts and therefore more people would get to read your thoughts, which I would hope would be something desirable to us all.

I'm sure admin here would obviously respect your views but like you point out, there's nothing you can do to stop others doing it. I have a private fb page for my nephew & brother to look at Epic stuff I am working on / games we have played and I often post links to this site there. My feeling is that once any of us post to this site we are essentially posting in a public place and that can end up anywhere on the internet...

@Irisado: I agree, I'd not like to see any fb page result in drawing traffic away from the site. Really a fb page should be a tool to draw people in. I'd advise most posts in a new fb page be links to here, with maybe the odd photos being posted to pique the interest of people on fb who have stumbled across the page and want to know more.

@Elsmore: I do understand where you are coming from but CS has no control over that group. By setting up his own community page, he can post as "Tactical Command" for official postings representing the views of the site. He can also use fb as Tactical Command and like & interact with other pages, hopefully advertising the page further and drawing more players in for discussion.

Anyway, I'm not trying to wind people up with this suggestion, so I hope I haven't upset anyone here! My main hope is that a fb page may help attract more players to the site and grow the community further. We all have a lot of love for Epic here and I'd like to see that shared with as many people as possible!

Just a couple of my thoughts on this. Firstly, my goal would be to use FB as a 'shop window'. I see little sense in replicating content or splitting discussions between a new outlet. There is no point having a thread start in both places simultaneously, for example. I would see the FB site as - for example - announcements on the Tale of Epic Gamers and an update/highlight once a month, EpiComp winners and announcements, site updates, breaking news about suppliments and releases from other manufacturers, and that kind of thing. (I see the Twitter account used for similar purposes.) This would mean that it wouldnt need a lot of care and attention to keep it going but would draw people in and show off some of the cool stuff going on here to a wider audience.

Not sure how serious you are, Apoc, about opting out. ;) But, given the above, I hope that you can see that it wouldnt necessarily be a reposting of people opinions or comments, out of context or anything like that. When there is a great thread - usually with pictures, lets be honest, for the FB crowd - then they could simply be mirrored with a link to the thread, but the intention would always be to get people to visit here, not move content out.

Also, this would be for the site, not just these boards, and so would include more general content than Epic, although that would obviously be a core, as it is here. For this reason, I believe that it would make sense to have a dedicated page, but I would be happy to work with the EA FB page, and 'friend them' (thats right.... isnt it? :eh :D ). In an ideal world, it wouldnt make any difference to this site or these boards, but would function as a more visible draw for more casual fans, people who play Epic as well as a variety of other games and just want highlights without the in depth coverage that we have here.

Exactly CS. Think of it as simply another door to allow people to saunter in and saddle up at the old TacCom saloon (if I may wax Americana for a moment :D)

Everything you say makes sense and I agree with your points, but I remain a grumpy guts.

Care would also be needed to keep many now-oop things off there as well?

I can tell you that there's plenty of pics of those OOP items running around FB already. :tut

Yes it is, I agree, but if we want to generate more activity on fora these days (I don't just mean this one), then we have to engage with how the majority uses the internet, and the ghastly Facebook and Twitter are very popular among the generation I teach (university undergraduates), and younger. If, therefore, we want to get more people interested in this aspect of the hobby, then we cannot ignore these social media outlets.

I fully agree with the way in which CS envisions using these social media outlets, and I hope that it does serve to pull in more users to the community.

Technically TacComms posts are already on Facebook. For example the recent poll discussing the 12 remaining Royal Empire Kingdoms was promoted via Facebook.
