Any chance on merging the current database and the backup? Even if the forums are offline a couple of days, this would be pretty great if all the things could be restored.

Its theoretically possible, and something that I am looking into, but the problem is the posts made by the users, more than the accounts themselves. It would require essentially adding in all posts almost by hand into the database, and that is likely to cause more problems than it would solve.

I will be contacting all affected members shortly, and apologise for the delay.

Is it all posts by the affected users, literally deleted from the DB? Not just orphaned from the user table?

If so I'd actually argue those are more important that posts between the last backup and now... all Greg's posts...

Turns out Hena is orphaned as well.

Maybe you can restore a backup to another database and clone an install of the forums pointing to it. In theory the tech inclined could look at restoring the missing relationships and record a script of changes/corrections to be run on production?
