Post subject:  Old Epic Material PDFs

I recently sent an email to Jervis asking werther it was possible to see some of the old Epic articles up on the Fanatic website.

We do plan to put some of the older articles up on the website over time.
The problem is getting the opportunity to scan the articles in and turn them
into PDFs. Now, if kind members of the Epic community were to do this for
us, then we'd happily put the material up on the Epic website for others to
download.

Best regards,

Jervis Johnson
Head Fanatic

Hi Jervis.

Time and time again the discussions have come up on the Epic forums about  the "good old days" when Epic recieved coverage in WD comparable with Warhammer and 40k. Seems that a great deal of people really loved those  articles.

I was just wondering if it is possible to somehow re-publish some of the old  Epic material like Battle reports, Painting guides and Background on the  website? Even if it is for outdated game systems no longer supported by GW the pics and background info are as relevant as ever. Also the more  narrative style of the old battlereports mean that they can still be read  with great ennjoyment even if you don't know the rules themselves. -I for one miss the old 5000+ points games of AT and SM: that was what really got me into Epic;-)

The relatively limited coverrage of Epic in WD and with Fanatic Mag still  not available I think this would be a relatively simple and inexpensive way to further promote the game.
I know this is also a question of available bandwith for the website but if  GW gave the permission I'm sure that many of the older players out there  would be more than happy to provide both scans (or even better: reworked  PDFs) and bandwith to host such materia on their sites. The interest is  definitely there.

Best regards
Christian Salling
aka brodersalsa and Warmaster Nice.

As I am currently studying Graphic design and much of my day is spent doing PDFs I wouldn't mind redoing some of the old article into download-friendly PDFs but I was wondering if some of you guys would help by providing scans of the original articles?

The scans need to be of such quality that the text can be read and the images need to be at a quality of at least 72 dpi (normal screen resolution.) It doesn't matter if the original is worn, has coffee spills, teethmarks from when the dog was trying to eat it etc. I'll be fixing up the images and rewrite the text anyway. Of course the higher quality the better.
I accept all formats but .jpg and .tiff are preferred.

To organize this we need to know who's got which articles and some means of getting them scanned. I was thinking about creating a yahoo briefcase and posting the password here so people can just dump the scans there (I only have a Hotmail adress so I cannot accept images via PM unfortunately :( )

What do you guys think?

Cheers! :)

Hi!

I've already done this (as some may know) and have the entire epic library in PDF format. This includes:

First edition
Space Marine rulebook
Codex Titanicus
Adeptus Titanicus
Compendium of WD articles

Second Edition
Space Marine rulebook
Armies of the Imperium
Warlords
Renegades
Hive War
Titan Legions (both books)
Space Marine Battles
WD article compendium (those articles not already repeated in the above books).

The files are large, scanned in full color at high resolution. The full set is over 2 GIGS.

So you might ask Jervis IF he wants it and I can sent it to him for alteration into smaller bits.

If the file sizes are too big, it could be redone given time, but I need to know his parameters for size and resolution.

I should have known Primarch :D

I think the main thing of interest would be the old WD articles.

Werther your stuff can be used directly would probably depend on the resolution of the scans. Anything above the 72 dpi screen size and they probably begin to get rather big if they are scans. I assume that the files will be just single articles available for download one at a time. Something in the region of 0.5-2 mb max for most articles sounds about right when you consider that the core rules part of the rulebook (26 pages) is around 4 mb. I just sent Jervis an Email asking about the whole file size issue.

As for the reworking process: I don't mind spending time on some of it if it means that some of the hard to come by material becomes publically available again.

Cheers! :)

Primarch sent me some of those on discs, for which we are eternally grateful !  I was going to send him a kidney but we could not find any volunteers and body parts don't travel well. See ... us old timers are good for something besides talking about the "good old days" !  Glad to see that some of the old fluff & stuff is going to be around.  This is a worthy project ...  :;):

I really wouldn't mind most of those books! Be it on the web or via CD or DVD disc, I would love a copy of them! Some of those would be hard to come by!

Cheers

This thread really demonstrates one of the best things about the Epic community- the fans working together to get something to happen is fantastic- good job people!  :D

Update:
Got another mail today. The resolution should only be 72 dpi. Can you resize the PDFs without having to re-scan everything Primarch? Unfortunately there's no update on exactly what they want.

...perhaps we could make a vote here for what articles people want to see?

Cheers! :)

I can do it - cable modem, the ability to resize and copies on cd that appeared some how.... guess one of the GW pixies was using my house as an offsite backup location :O

I can't do it....

Files get compressed from 115 MB for Armies of the Imperium to 30MB at 72 DPI, B&W.

Not that these CDs were ever at my house - figmant of my imagination :o

Don't wanna sound heretical in any way shape or form by doesn't Jervis just link to the NetEPIC files? They are pretty close and small downloads....

I think the main thing of interest is some of the old pics from old WD articles, battlereports, scenarios, painting guides and stuff.

The big problem is really that these are all full scans ie. one giant image on each page. If the images are cut out and pasted into a new document and the text rewritten/extracted (using a program that can do that) the files will become much smaller. OTOH a full army book is much larger than your normal WD article so perhaps the size is usable for those as is? (i hope that made any sense... not sure I understand what I just wrote myself :p )

Cheers!
