Right so,

Me and my mate played a few games over the weekend using scenarios from Ill Met by Moonlight and War of Lost faiths. It was Squats vs Death Guard and in one game the undefended Goliaths at the back were assaulted by teleporting Plague Zombies.

We scoured the rulebook but still the question arose:

Since the Zombies lost the combat and were broken but are fearless, they do not have to withdraw. On the Goliath activation they are still in base-to-base with the Zombies, do the Goliaths have to make an engage move since even if they treble they will not leave the Zombie ZoC?

Do only the defending units lose ZoC in B2B in an assault, or does being in B2B make units from both sides lose ZoC?

Fearless gave us a few interesting problems, anyone got any experience similar or are we missing something in the rules?

Any assistance much appreciated.

Ya, if you can't get out of zoc you'd have to assault.

Both sides.

The closest thing I've had to this involved a terminator assault on a python. Marines won but the pylon lost. Marines stayed in base contact, and were immediately drawn into the assault when assault marines later engaged the pylon.

Thanks Dave, that's what we played in the end, seemed the only reasonable thing to do.

Though I'm sure somewhere in the rules (haven't got them by me right now) it states that the only time a unit loses it's ZoC is when it is B2B with another unit (or units equalling it's starting DC if a WE).

So if the zombies are in B2B but have no ZoC at the start of the Goliath activation then why must the Goliath assault?

Good to hear we judged it correctly but there does seem to be a grey area there?

The bit that's missing is that the units only lose their ZoC for the rest of the activation. As soon as the Zombie's activation ends, everyone regains their ZoC.

Once a unit has been contacted by an engaging enemy unit, it loses its own zone of control for the rest of that engage action (including the ensuing assault).

Ah, that must be the bit we missed!

Now it all makes sense, thank you.

Death Guard and their massive amount of fearless makes them very difficult opponents in certain situations!
