Post subject:  Codex Astartes Space Marines "They shall know no fear" rule

Hi, noob here :)

A friend and me are playing through the training scenarios and there is a rule that we don't fully understand.

From the "They shall know no fear" special rule:
Quote:
When a broken Space Marine formation rallies, it receives a number of Blast markers equal to the number of units, rather than half this number

What puzzles me is the "rather than half this number". Is this refered to the 1.14.1 Rallying Formations?
Quote:
If the test is passed then remove half the Blast markers from the formation, rounding fractions up.

I would expect Space Marines are better at this rather than worse :-/

How does this fully works?

Thank you :D

Yes, it feels a bit weird. However the aim of the rallying rule is to put the formation to "half way to breaking" situation. Since Marines require twice as much blast markers to break the end result is half way to breaking even if they end up having more BMs numerically (due to ATSKNF).

Put another way: a broken Space Marine formation of six units that rallies gets 6 BMs, while a broken Ork formation of six units that rallies gets 3BMs.

Space marine special rules focus on being able to ignore/lessen the effect of having BMs, rather than avoiding getting their fair share.

Space Marine Leaders do remove double the BMs as regular Leaders.

You could take all the TSKNF rules and swap them for, "every time a SM formation would gain a blast marker, they gain only half a blast marker instead" and the game effect would be almost identical (the actual rule means it takes the Marines an extra turn to remove the final blast marker -- but that final marker isn't actually suppressing anything). However, while this is a much simpler rule to write, it would be more difficult to track half-markers in game, and you also have to decide how to round a quarter of a blast marker.

To expand on Dave's point above, consider what happens after the formation of orcs and formation of Marines rallies.

They are both six strong formations, and the Marines do have twice as many blast markers . But, for game purposes, the Marines' six markers only have the same effect as the orcs' three anyway (as it takes two markers to suppress, and the number is halved when calculating assaults). More importantly, it will only take three more blast markers to break the orcs again (a shooting attack that gets one kill would also suffice), while it will take six more to break the Marines (or you'd need to kill two in a shooting attack).

One other minor point.

The first section you quoted is actually referring directly to rules found a little further down 1.14.1, relating specifically to broken formations:

Quote:
A broken formation that rallies is no longer broken. It counts as having as many Blast markers as units, half of which will be removed for passing the Rally test.

When an unbroken Space Marine formation rallies, it removes half it's blast markers, just like everyone else (+2 per leader, unlike everyone else who only gets +1).
