Personally I think lots of markerlights is important, don't skimp on the recons. Tau can be vulnerable to assaults so skyrays also good for both markerilghts and air cover. Fire warriors are solid choices. Different groups have been divided on hammerheads, some spam them, others think they arent worth the points, though they were made a bit better with Lance. The ionhead is sadly clearly worse. I like broadsides a lot. Sadly crisis are generally only included for the supreme commander too.
A tricky thing with Tau is balancing AP and AT and having it in the right place, as the units tend to be specialised. I probably ought not dish out too much advice as I don't play Tau particularly competitively - I love using the funky special rules like guided missiles, which distracts me from actually gaining victory conditions
