Our group is slowly using Air craft, and now we have a bit mote access to drop podding. Just confused on how many I can take for example. Using the codex Marines army list...

Strike Cruiser says:
Transport. May transport 20 infantry units, Attack Bikes, or Dreadnoughts; plus 20
armoured vehicle units (except Dreadnoughts); plus six Thunderhawk Gunships and
enough Drop Pods or Landing Craft to transport any other units being carried.

Drop pod says:
Planetfall, Transport. May transport one formation of only the following units:
Devastator, Dreadnought, Tactical.

Question: Can 1 drop pod drop off a whole formation of tactical marines? (6 stands) Does these 6 stands count against the 20 listed under the capacity of the strike cruiser? So id have 14 worth left? So at max, a strike Cruiser can drop off 3 drop pods of tac marines.

If the strike cruiser can hold 20 AV units, how does it drop them off exactly?

Thanks to any helps, we are just getting started to explore drop ships

You are correct about the infantry and vehicle wise you would need a landing craft to planetfall them in :)

Landing craft

A drop army is fun but very challenging to play. You really have to make good drop location choices and you need a little luck. Its a very shock and awe sort of force, turn one is generally bad for the opponent and it comes down to how well they can recover. The marines in the drops pods also lose a lot of mobility and unit size after they are deployed due to the lack of the usual rhinos.

Scourn99, also not that you use the drop pod as a marker for the general location the formation dropped, not a pod per unit like older versions.

Another thing to note, while the Space cruiser can hold a total of 20 units (infantry, Terminators or Dreadnoughts), ThunderHawks and Landing Craft treat dreadnoughts and Terminators as taking up two spaces, and there is a limit to the number of transport aircraft that can be carried.

Final point, it is the spaceship that activates, the process of planetfalling (positioning and scattering the transports, and disembarking the formations) is merely a means of putting the formations on to the table; all the formations that arrive by planetfall can then activate later in the turn, including any ThunderHawks and Landing Craft that were used in this way.
