Post subject: | [ Rules Query ] Air Assault / overwatch / cover |
Hi guy´s, just a little question that came up during today´s game. An eldar vampire is laden with aspects and air assaulting a unit of landraiders, and a unit of tacticals nearby triggers overwatch and fires on them. Can the aspects disembark in base to base with the vampire, and in that way be counted in cover from the tacticals firing overwatch? the rules say overwatch is triggered when the aspects disembark, but i cant find a clear answer about the rest. |

Yes they can, also they can claim cover from enemy vehicles too. Quote: 1.8.4 Terrain Effects
Q: Can an infantry unit claim cover from enemy armored vehicles? A: Yes. The rule as written does not distinguish between friendly and enemy vehicles for cover benefits. Some groups feel this is an odd situation and house rule that the cover from enemy units is not allowed, so feel free to cover this in the 5-minute warm-up with your opponent. |

Thank you guy´s. I was thinking they would get no cover because the air assault was underway and units attacking in assault get no cover. Quote: Q:Do units in cover in an Assault get a Cover Save? A:Only the Defender. From 1.12.5 “Infantry units from formations undertaking an Engage action may not take Cover Saves (they are assumed to have left cover to charge the enemy), but other infantry units may”. So during the air assault, when troops disembark from a Vampire or thunderhawk, the assault itself has not begun yet. And so they can take cover from overwatch fire? |

Yes, there was a big debate a while ago about this. A few, myself included, believed that once the initiative roll had been made then the assault was under way and no cover bonus should be allowed. It was agreed, by the majority, that the assault doesn't start until after movement and overwatch and so forth, hence the FAQ about enemy vehicles counting for cover. |

Exactly, OW fire happens before the assault. |
