Pretty soon I'm going to start assembling the bulk of the first of my epic-scale armies and a thought occurred to me. How will I model commanders? In the Codex Astartes list (at least) there are multiple commander types with the Librarian, Captain and Chaplain, as well as the supreme commander, added to the fact that such leaders can be added to terminator, devastator, assault or tactical units and the potential array of different command units could be quite dizzying!

Thus my (possibly crazy and unworkable) thought. I'm mounting the troops on strip bases, five per and very uniform where possible - so what about mounting commander models on smaller, distinct bases (I was thinking small round washers) and playing them simply as an attached marker to another base rather than units. Given that I've not actually had the chance to get a game in I want to ask those that have (you lot, basically) whether it seems workable, practical or just crazy and I should go with some other solution or universal standard, other than just making a command base for every combination of troop type and commander.

Totally workable. In fact there's a few people here that do just that

I do exactly this and it works out fine and keeps the forces a little more flexible. I did it mostly for Exarchs and Commisars, but I imagine it would work for just about tanythign else too. just try and keep the base for characters as distinct as possible so it doesnt get confusing.

I used 5p coins like the commissar on the bottom left:

I place flags on Command stands [ a tradition from SM1 ] ... Mix the figures and even paint Commisars in colors to match the unit ... scoll thru on this link - http://s48.photobucket.com/user/Legion4 ... 7476983308

I have been collecting armies for netepic, but when converted to EA, I have found that I have loads of spare command stands! Would people object to a command stnd with a chaplain and tac marines leading an assault detachment?

Ill be making some dedicated ones soon anyway

I certainly wouldn't object to playing someone who did that but I couldn't speak for anyone else. For me, this was as much about finding that out as digging up useful alternates, or knowing that my thought on a solution was practical.

Thanks to everyone for opinions and suggestions so far! If there's more, I'd love to hear (and see!) what other people do with their leaders.

I do something in between Legion and Yorkie - I've got character stands for my Death Guard Plague Marines with a magnet in (they're all magnetised for transport) and then have banners on small metal flagpoles that get used to show what kind of character upgrade is present.
