That is the correct layout. You will note that each deployment area is only 5 feet long so the entire area is only 2.25 sq. feet, as compared with the standard deployment are that is 6 feet long and covers 3 sq. feet

This is useful in two ways
1. This reduced deployment area allows you to have a better chance of spacecraft bombardment hitting a target,

2. In general it means that enemy formations have further to travel so you can make it harder for non-mechanised armies to reach objectives.

I have to admit that this this rule had happily passed me by until yesterday in my game with Rastamann!! Definitely one to remember - it could make things very tricky for a foot slogging horde army...
