Post subject:  Hello everyone and help me identify miniatures

Hello everyone. I am new to this board. I have been looking at a variety of 15mm and 6mm games. I found a great deal on a bunch of Epic stuff so am leaning toward that game. However, since GW isn't supporting it anymore, I'm looking here.

I might end up using the miniatures with Future War Commander, but am interested to know what you all think of the two games (or other alternatives).

I was also hoping to get some help identifying some models.

Hi!

These are original style Imperial Guard Gorgon troop transports. Under older rules they carried 5 stands of infantry and had heavy frontal armor.

I really like future war commander, fine ruleset. While GW no longer supports epic, I see no reason you can't try any of the versions of epic. They are still available for download in several places.

Net Epic Gold (second edition space marine variant) is available here:

Welcome to the boards. :)

Welcome aboard, Sean.

I totally agree with Primarch. GW not supporting Epic is no reason not to try Epic. You'll get plenty of support here! I recommend either the current rules, Epic:Armageddon, or Net Epic Gold. Both are solid rules sets.

Thanks for the welcome and identifying the model.

I have a pdf of Future War Commander and the pdf of Epic: Armageddon that GW had on their sight before they took it down.

My biggest issue is finding players. My group doesn't have anyone that plays these small scale games. I'm hopeful that if I put some armies together and run some games, they may get interested.

I would recommend trying Epic Armageddon, it's my favourite wargame with lot of tactical complexity and movement.

Where about in the world are you based? There are around 10 EpicA tournaments a year if you're in the UK. Otherwise just build a couple of armies and convince people to try it. Try selling it to 40k players that they can get to play a better game system with multiple titans in a few hours rather than spending all day or days at it with Apocalypse.

Its worth joining here

To find local players. There is also a threat on the board for player locations that is helpful!

Arguably this is the best reason to play epic ;)

Yes, those are Gorgon Mk.Is ... they originally had mine laying and clearing capabilities ... if you look closely you can see (Teller) mines in a rack on top of the rear hull. Image But you could certainly use it for an APC ... And we don't care what GW does Epic support or not ... there are a lot of good 6mm Sci-fi model companies out there. At least 4 or 5 are denizens here ... As well as there are other good 6mm Sci-fi rules out there, also who have forums here. If you are interested in 6mm Sci-fi ... here's the place to be ...

I agree, GW not supporting the game any longer means the rules won't be completely destroyed every couple of years so that all the players have to go out and buy a whole new army.

I have read through the rules and I generally like them. I like the idea of large scale battles and using tiny models is the way to get them done on a tabletop.

Which of these rule systems would you all consider to be less complex. I'm a fan of simplicity. Especially when I'm going to have to be the one that knows the rules so I can teach everyone else.

GlynG I live in the great state of Nebraska in the good ole USA. It doesn't seem to be an Epic or FWC hotspot.

I have only played SM2 and Epic:A. Personally I think SM2 is the less complicated, however when you add in all the unit abilities it becomes complex. I also don't think it's as tactical or flowing as E:A. Again personally I think E:A is a little bit harder to learn but it's more tactical and free flowing. Plus if you use the original rules and learn in stages (ie keep war engines like titans out of it at the start, and also exclude aircraft for your first few games) it's relatively simple to learn - especially if you have precious GW experience.

The community here is great at helping and clarifying rules. So try the scenarios in the EA book and see how you go. I have only been playing for a few months and am sorry to say much prefer EA.

That being said I haven't tried net epic, which is a fan based version of SM2 that's supposed to be good. Hope I haven't offended anyone! :)

No offence taken Berkut, but I would like to take a moment to offer a counter-view.

E:A is the latest and most popular version of Epic and I recently gave it a go. I dunno if I'm just stupid, but despite half a dozen games I just found it so complicated that games kept grinding to a halt as I had to repeatedly return to the rules. I know this isn't the experience of most E:A players but it was mine.

NetEpic is definitely easier to pick up and play although the complexity is added with more unit abilities but for me this makes the units more individual and you don't have to learn these all at once. Start off with basic units and start trying the odd specialist unit as you play more games.

Admittedly E:A is more flowing, but I'm working hard on devising a fix for that - I'm hoping that my idea will be able to steal the best of E:A while retaining everything that makes NetEpic a joy to play.

My advice is that you check out both rulesets and decide what you prefer best! There are plenty of people around that will be able to help you with questions that you have about either game you choose!

Good luck and enjoy the war!

Bissler, were you trying to do War Engines and Aircraft and everything or were you working up to it slowly?

Personally, I found the NetEpic rules to be messy and confusing when I read 'em. They felt a lot like they expected people to have already played Space Marine. Then again, since this was probably a decade ago, that's not necessarily worth all that much.

Nope, this was the basics that I found very confusing. I only played the training scenarios which involved troops and then troops and vehicles.

I was completely fine with the basic firing rules but where I found things confusing was once assaults were engaged, other units being drawn into the combat, resolving the combat and assigning additional hits to the losing side.

I love the idea of units being suppressed because of incoming fire as it makes great logical sense, but in practice I found the placing of markers and then rolling to see if you could lose them in the end phase quite tedious.

I'm sure there are probably people sitting sniggering as they read this, but even after playing 6 consecutive games the penny would not drop and we spent more time referring to the rules than engaged in the game. These games which only involved a handful of units took hours to play. In NetEpic I could have hammered through the scenarios in probably 15 to 30 mins.

From what I've heard, things only get worse once War Engines get involved so I'm glad I cut my losses when I did. Maybe if I played along with someone who had some experience of E:A I may have been able to pick things up better, who knows...

I found the NetEpic rules fine, but I was one of those players who knew the Space Marine rules inside out so I'm not best placed to comment properly on this. I think the system is far easier for new players to pick up, but yes I am biased!
