To any E:A fans who may have read my earlier jest to use your forum to recruit NetEpic players, rest assured, this thread is nothing of the kind.

And to any NetEpic fans who think I have given up on that game: I haven't!

One of my friends has expressed in trying out E:A so I've decided to give it a go! I've read the 1st part of the rulebook and am ready to start the first training missions (takes me back to the early days of 1st edition Space Marine) which will begin tomorrow. I'm regarding this as an opportunity to get two different games out of one set of miniatures. My NetEpic battles will continue every other weekend, while I'd expect to play E:A every other Wednesday.

I'll let you know how I get on!

I'm a diehard SM2 fan (therefore by extension NetEpic, too) and after the Epic40k debacle I was skeptical about E:A, but I must say that E:A is a solid set of rules. I have same idea as you: playing two games with one set of minis!

I started out with NetEpic because i really got the wrong idea about how the E:A rules worked.
Luckily my friend told me too check them out again and I've never looked back since.

Where NetEpic feels like a very static game with alot of stand still and shoot at each other at long ranges, NetEA is way more straregic and interesting IMO.

I wish you a very great gaming experience!

Ok first off, a big thanks to jimmyzimms for helping me out via Facebook chat, if he hadn't been there to answer our questions, the whole thing would have ground to a halt!

We did the 1st training mission tonight, 2 squads of 6 Marines each (I want to call them Tactical stands, but shoudn't do that here...) on each side. I thought this would be a doddle and we'd get it done in half an hour. 3 hours later...

Everything seemed ok at first, we both understood the movement and the firing was fine. But then when the assaults started, everything ground to a halt and we spent a lot of time going back and forth through the rulebooks. Scrolling through PDFs took a lot of time.

Amusingly we drew one assault twice which meant we had to fight 3 times in the one turn! I did lose in the end but this was mostly down to an early assault where I had terrible luck and my pal had the opposite!

It certainly was an interesting experience and I can see why people think it is more fluid than NetEpic (because it is). I really like the idea of moving and firing each unit all in the one go.

I don't know if this will continue or not because my opponent is pretty new to wargaming and this had him scratching his head a lot. He played NetEpic a while back and felt he understood that better, so whether we continue playing E:A remains to be seen...

Good on you for being open minded and giving it a try. You might as well be open to playing both if it gets you games and use of your collection.

Don't give up after one game though! I understand you both trying to get your head around the rules took a long while, but the hardest bit is getting started and things would be easier in future.

If there are any areas you're unclear on or wondering just post up asking, it wouldn't be as quick as having Jimmy on tap but you'd get replies.

Feel free to still call them Tactical stands if you like though, I do sometimes.

Cheers Glyn, I think we're going to persevere for several more games to see if we can properly get to grips with it. It would be a terrible shame to let Jimmy's excellent advice go to waste after all!

As for having Jimmy "on tap", I reckon I might be all tapped out after plaguing him last night! ;)

Speaking of which, thanks again bud, appreciated your on the spot help and tips!

Printing the rulebooks out helps immensely. :)

I'd suggest the Tourny Pack sans army lists. :D

My pal printed off Section 1 so we had a go again last night.

There was still a lot of referring to the rules but we redid the first training mission and had enough time to do the second (which is the same mission again only with Rhinos).

It was much more fun this time around and I think we are beginning to understand the rules! We both used the crossfire rule (though I could envision that there could be debates in future as to exactly when crossfire is allowed) and I was all proud of myself for managing to use the supporting fire in an assault! We won one game apiece so that was nice result as well.

We're getting there, slowly but surely!

Great to hear! Time for some aerospace units next, methinks.

I should also point out that I didn't get a single message from you last night regarding rules :)

Other than a solitary Thunderhawk and some Squat Overlords I don't have any fliers so don't think that will happen any time soon Jimmy! :-\

Hopefully your days as instant E:A rules support are over... But I make no promises!
