Just a quick question- the Imperial Guard infantry models that you get with the GW Infantry Company- are they supposed to represent Steel Legion guardsmen?? I know at that scale they could represent any type of guardsmen, but I was just wondering what type of Imperial guardsmen the models were 'officially' Thanks Carlos |

I believe they were originally intended to be valhallans, but they look suitably steel legion esque with a decent paint job.... |

Thanks, I did wonder about that- They looked like Valhallans....but were released for Epic:Armageddon, which is where the Steel Legion fought Carlos |

That was GW being rather tight-fisted and not creating any new plastics when EA was released. GW would always bleat on about how expensive it was to make the metal injection moulds for plastics. Instead, they simply recycled the valhallans they had already created back with Epic 40k. What was weird though, was that they did infact create a new injection mould, as the current configuration of Guard, ratlings and ogryns on the sprue isn't the same that came with the vahallans in the Epic 40k boxes. So if they made a new injection mould, why didn't they just create a new mould with some new steel legion on them whilst they were at it? There is also a 100% guarantee that there will be no new plastics created by GW for EA whilst they push their cash-cows, warhammer and 40k. Sad times... |

I think it's comparitively easy to bodge existing moulds together, compared to tens of thousands to re-tool them from scratch.... |

Quote: if they made a new injection mould, why didn't they just create a new mould with some new steel legion on them whilst they were at it Basically what kyussinchains said - they already had the masters that let them cut new steel to re-tool the existing moulds, which cost a few thousand pounds per mould. The alternative (brand new moulds) would have required a whole new set of master models, and ten times the budget. |

On eBay you can still find the old Catachans for Epic as well as the even older original IG, that kind of look like Cadians ... But both DRM and Exodus Wars makes a line of human infantry that can also be used as various IG ... ![]() ![]() |

yeah, you're probably right with regards to re-tooling the moulds. I never understood why they apparently cost so much to make. GW must have there own people tooling theirs, so it's not like they out-source the work to another company. |

As to not start another thread for a fairly similar topic: How are the command squads set up? 5 models consisting of a commissar, pysker and what other 3 men? |

Well the models are not really the important thing as long as you know which one is the command stand. It could be as simple as a slightly different paint job to using an old flag stand (ala 1st/2nd edition style) to a full blown character filled stand. And mind you that doesn't mean the crap that GW sells only. For instance I've got an "in flight" Elysian / Warhawks force (proxy with EW guild assault centuria) and I am using a Cyclops demo vehicle to pick out the command stand in one of the companies I also decided to throw in some gold paldrons on the Commander and paint one of the troopers as a medic. There's no effect on play, just visually distinct and makes it easy to spot. ![]() As I have a butt load of old robots and even a few squats I am thinking of leveraging them in the same way to help pick out the command stands for various troops. The real point is that anything goes (within reason) and don't get hung up on "doing it right". ![]() |

Looks like we've got the same discussion going on here. Should probably refocus this back on topic and continue command stand Q's there instead. |
