Post subject:  please critique my eldar list....

looking to put an eldar army together for the upcoming epicUK Full scale assault event in Feb.....

looking at something like this:

WRAITHGATE [50]

AVATAR [0]

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [600] (exarchs are fire dragons)
4 Dire Avenger, Exarch, Autarch, 4 Wave Serpent, 2 Dark Reaper, 2 Fire Dragon

GUARDIAN WARHOST [350]
Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Support Weapon Platforms, 3 Wraithguard, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform

ENGINES OF VAUL TROUPE [500]
2 Scorpion

ENGINES OF VAUL TROUPE [250]
Void Spinner

WINDRIDER TROUPE [200]
6 Vyper

RANGER TROUPE [100]
4 Ranger

REVENANT TITANS [650]
2 Revenant Titans

NIGHTWINGS [300]
3 Nightwing Interceptors

how does it look as a general purpose list? my idea is to use the aspects to grab objectives with support from the revenants and vypers, the scorpions, guardians and void spinner are for softening up formations at a distance for the aspects to charge in and finish off

total newcomer to eldar, feel free to destroy and rebuild the list, I've got access to plenty of eldar stuff, so this isn't limited by my collection (no warlock titan yet, although I'm hoping santa may bring me one....)

To a new player of Eldar I would probably advise to drop the Nightwings and take Falcons & Firestorms with an additional 2 stands of Rangers. I would also split the scorpions for an additional activation. Current feeling is that the scorpions are understrengthen and Falcons are better, but you could be the player to prove otherwise.

Give it a go and see how you like it.

The scorpion pair will likely disappoint and I think your 1 activation light maybe so I'd split them into singles.

With just the fixed gate the guardians are too expensive to sit on your blitz, but not mobile enough to be a real threat.

Eldar generally play the hit, run and outnumber game to win.

thanks for the advice gents :)

I took the nightwings as I've come up against orcas and thunderhawks a few times now and in both experiences, the lances would have made the difference between a dead transport and troops, and crisis suits running onto my blitz.....

I've swapped the guardians out for a mounted formation, added a couple of rangers, dropped the nightwings for a falcon formation with 2 firestorms, and split the scorpions, any other fundamental problems with the list? I've got a pair of storm serpents and an extra void spinner if they are better options than the scorpions?

Sounds good to me, gives you more activations and more mobility. I'd give it a go like that. For storm serpents to be affective they really need to be the focus of the list. 2 scorpions+1 void spinner vs 2 spinners + 1 scorpion is a matter of taste really. Some times one will be more useful, sometimes the other.

You can only play with the list and see if it to your taste. There are no errors, just things that you might decide not to do again. (Mine is often picking up my dice in the first place :) )

Don't try this "my dice were worse than Gingers" rubbish here Tiny-Tim. Your lists are still dirty :)

one very minor thing I wasn't sure about was adding some heavy weapons to the mounted guardians for a bit of punch if they're trying to sit on an objective?

No, they are there to be aggressive so you want all the FF 4+ you can have. A couple of pea shooters won't scare anyone really.

I'd think some more about overall strategy, as Eldar armies tend to play best when everything is focused on the same goal. So, for using mounted aspects as an assault hammer (something they're pretty good at), it's worth having another couple of assault formations along with it for the classic assault-consolidate-support Eldar tactic. Mounted guardians are great for this, Shining Spears would work well too, Vypers less so although they're still useful for prepping and supporting an assault. Revenants are pretty powerful in the EUK list, but fragile, so sticking them in the enemy's face is relatively risky if you don't manage to take down enough of their army in your 2nd turn assaults - in my mind they'd work very well for a highly mobile hit'n'run shooting force (with Scorpions/Falcons/Vypers), perhaps less so for an assault force.

One or two void spinners (singles) would be very useful for an assault oriented army for prepping assaults and counterbattery fire to protect your assault formations from accumulating BMs. Scorpions aren't bad, but are more dependent on the type of army you're facing; vs. high value SM, they do pretty well, vs. horde armies like Orks or IG, they get swamped with targets. Although Falcons are fragile, they pack a huge punch and provide excellent mobile AA. I very much like Nightwings - they're scary to transports, can usually wipe out aircraft formations and are pretty decent ground attack aircraft, especially against LV. Also, Eldar ground AA (titans perhaps excepted) doesn't tend to last for long!

Another option for an assault force is a Vampire + troops of some sort. Aspects would be rather pricey, but Guardians would make an interesting "soft target/ deep strike" option for not many points, plus you'll have some mobile AT fire from the Vampire if it survives..

Now, if you were thinking of a webway based assault strategy, you need storm serpent(s), warpspiders and/ or upgraded guardians, plus a lot of activations to make up for all the ones you're keeping off board, which would probably mean dropping the mounted aspects and stumping for some shining spears to take your Autarch for a reasonable no. of points. It's a very effective strategy if you can protect your storm serpents, but it can go down hill very fast. Plus your troops are generally less mobile once deployed than the mounted assault strategy, so that's also something to think about.

There really aren't any hard and fast ways to play Eldar, but the 2 general pieces of advice are to stick to one strategy and to keep your flexibility/ activation count up

Yeah, but when they work and make those saves...ooooh doggie! Nothing like having your opponent throw TK after TK after MW after MW shots all game long and nothing to show for it, while you slice and dice him up...yeah I'm kinda a fan.
