Post subject:  slow fire and multiple shots question

this came up in a game recently, I was using a warhound titan and on turn 1 elected to fire a single shot with the plasma blastgun, I fired a second shot on turn 2, my question is how many shots can I fire on turn 3?

in the game we played that I could only fire one, but I'm not so certain now I think about it.....

If there is no concrete answer, please let me know your rationale behind your thoughts....

1 as the shot you fired turn 2 is reloading turn 3

Just had a look at the rules, and it seems Rules As Written, that you technically couldn't have fired on the second turn. The Plasma Blastgun, at least by the War Gryphonnes 3.18 and NetEA Mechanicus Draft Document (not sure if there's a later published source), say the Plasma Blastgun is a 2xMW2+ Slow Firing. Slow Firing (Section 2.2.8) specifically refers to the weapon, and not any shots, being unable to fire in the next turn.

The Leman Russ Demolisher is in a slightly different boat, as it's 2xPlasma Cannons, so each can be fired (and put under the downtime) seperately.

Not sure if that's how the Plasma Blastgun is supposed to work, but seems to be how the rules pertain to it.

Check the FAQ's.

Technically, the Warhaund has a special rule allowing it to fire only one shot, but the Blastgun does not, meaning at this time that only applies to the Warhound. There has been discussion, but AFAIK no consensus, on whether this rule should apply to all Multishot Slow Firing weapons (effectively all Titan-class Plasma Weapons).

Unless I'm mistaken, the FAQ pertains specifically to the Warhound Titan PBG. Other PBGs (e.g. Stormblade, Warlord) and other multishot Slow Firing weapons are not included, though perhaps they should be.

you absolutely can only fire 1 shot on turn3 in that example, as your other shot was reloading
in exactly the same way as a manticore battery cannot choose not to fire on turn 1, and fire on turns 2 and 3. you cannot 'pre-reload'

The FAQ may be specific to Warhounds, but the concept would apply across the board.

Regardless of the fact that a special rule on the Warhound is what allows it?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's fair that the special rule on the Warhound be a general standard for the interaction of Slow Firing and multiple shots. However, it's not right now, due to the fact the FAQ refers to the Warhound specifically, and not multishot Slow Firing weapons in general.

I would very much support the changing of the FAQ to reflect this change, but given the current wording and context, I don't think it's (technically) allowable to keep reserve shots except on the Warhound.

I've never played against anybody who didn't play all slow firing weapons exactly as the warhounds.

Spectrar Ghost: One of the things I like about Epic is that people tend to play to the spirit rather than the wording of the rules.

Again, I'd play the same, but if the FAQ relating to it were broadened in scope it would be better. Changing it from a near universal house rule to something codified would make sense.

FAQ - 2.2.8 Slow Fire wrote:
Q: Can you decide to fire a single shot from a Warhound Titan’s Blastgun each turn or must you wait a turn for "recharging" if you fire just a single shot from it?
A: You can fire one every turn if you wish.

Very specific, and frankly little room for interpretation.

This would solve the problem, though I'm not too enamoured of the wording.

Q: If a Slow Firing weapon has multiple shots, can I 'save' one or more for use next turn, or will they be lost?
A: You may 'save' shots in this case, with the used shots spending the following turn reloading. For instance, a Plasma Blastgun may fire two shots one turn and none the next, or may 'save' a shot and fire one in each turn.

zombo - I do like that too, but life becomes easier when the two are not different.

This was discussed about a month ago and the FAQ will be changing to be more general in its wording.

FAQ review will be starting early in the new year once the dust of the compendium release has settled.

I'd agree that updating the FAQ would be good, but I don't think it's strictly necessary.
