Hello All

I am looking at making some terrain pieces to use as objectives.

I wonder if anyone can give me guidence on the best size (footprint) for the objectives, and perhaps various ideas to make them interesting and varied.

For the footprint I was thinking of a circle roughly 7-8 cm in diameter (about the size of a post-it note).

Ideas for various objectives:-
- A fuel bunker (read that somewhere - rules I think)
- A stack of ammo crates
- A shipping container (containing something interesting/important)
- A fantastic missile that has been dropped/lost (aka Broken Arrow style)
- A fortification
- A wrecked vehicle (land raider/thundehawk) carrying important documents
- A communications array

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

We have not yet played objectives (thus far it has simply been about slaughter) and I feel (much as the rule book states) it is better to fight over an interesting objective rather than a cardboard token.

Thanks all

If you use a circular base, then you can use just the center point to measure from as the objective, so the size won't matter much.

Cheers zombocom.

I was wondering how one went about measuring. So a circular base would work well.. :)

I'd recommend something small if you're going the terrain route. Objective markers are just that: markers. They're not supposed to be terrain pieces and affect the game beyond the victory conditions. If you make them too big you'll begin to wonder why all your troops can't hide behind/inside of it, etc.

I used 40mm rounds for mine, and a lot of people around here use the 60mm round titan bases. Whatever you do just make sure the center is clear for the T&Hs and the back center is clear for the blitz.

I ended up going with with a bunker, pillbox and Damocles for my SM ones.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the recomendations. I guess a 40mm round base would pretty much fit anywhere a unit could so is probably a good size.

I am not clear on the terminology here. What do you mean by

and

respectively.

What is T&Hs and why should back center be clear for the blitz? What do you mean by the 'back center'

Sorry - but newbie here so I don't quite get the language yet.

Cheers

T&Hs - Take and Hold Objectives. These are the ones you place on your opponents board half. The center needs to be clear because that's where you measure to for contesting/controlling (15cm).

Blitz - Blitzkrieg Objective. This is the one place on your board edge. You don't measure to the center for this one, you measure to the board edge (the center of the back edge of the objective). For round bases I usually measure to where the base touches the board edge.

I've gone with 2p pieces for basing mine. On one T&H objective, I have a fallen statue (using an old mk6 power armour marine as the statue itself on top of the base), on the second T&H I've gone for a rhino that's hit a mine with an injured marine laying face down next to it and for my blitz, I've got a marine commander standing atop a rock waving his sword in the air whilst a marine stands nearby.

I'd go for keeping them small, as Dave pointed out, they're just supposed to be markers after all and shouldn't get in the way of moving troops around :)

Those are also nice ideas Enri

So is it general practice for each army to provide their own objective markers?

Also, is it generally the practice that these objectives do not provide cover to LoS?

Cheers

Pretty much yea, though I'm sure it's not unheard of for people to lend objectives out whilst others are getting their stuff together (thanks Mephiston :D)

For myself, I think they're just a neat tiny little project to add a bit more flavour to your army.. like my objectives are representative of objectives marines would go after: the fallen comrade by the broken vehicle... perhaps he was carrying some once lost chapter artefact when he was ambushed and the marine force is out to retrieve his body and the artefact? similarly, the fallen statue could again mark some important artefact, or it could mark the site of a famous engagement / victory of the chapter?

Orks... might have some looted 'teknology' that the orks are keen to get their hands on, maybe it'll make their guns more shootier / more bangier?

Chaos... some long forgotten artefact from the fall of the eldar has been uncovered and the chaos forces are out to recover it for their own nefarious purposes?

Just nose around your army's fluff, instant inspiration :)

I've always assumed that objective markers had zero impact on LOS nor do they provide cover, whether you put the objective marker in cover is another matter altogether though :)

You could make three generic objective markers and use them with all your armies. I think making them for each army though adds a little more flavor though.

And yes, objectives don't affect the game in anyway. You could use pieces of cardboard like previous editions did and it would still be the same as if you modeled something.

Interestingly, the Tournament Scenario rules do actually recommend using pieces of terrain as objective markers, with no note as to whether they actually count as terrain....

Don't tell that to Mosc. He's got a huge Necron ruin complex (it covers about a1/6 of the board) that he'd love to plop down as his "blitz" when playing Elysians.

Here's a pic of the objective markers I was talking about, albeit in a bit of a WIP state.. need to do some more work on the rhino / commander objectives :)

Some people use "destroyed" vehicles (see above), which can possibly work to your advantage. I have been confused more than once where the objectives looked very like real units in the opponents army - but then I am easily confused :)
