If I engage a formation on overwatch and get into base to base does the overwatch formations get cover saves if they are in the open?

I think, but someone will know, that once the overwatching formation has fired at the engaging one they are no longer on overwatch and would therefore not get cover saves.

Yup, novemberrain is right. If they choose to forgo the fire though they get cover saves. If they win they're still on overwatch even if they counter-charged and consolidated.

Infantry in the open on Overwatch doesn't get a cover save. They get only the -1 to hit if someone shoots at them.

P.18 in the rulebook says they do. And that the cover save is a 5+ cover save.

Was this maybe changed in the 2008 errata? I didn't think they got a save either.

Nope, it's always been there. It's an oft forgotten rule.

Dammit.
I confused it with vehicle cover.

Ah me too. To be fair I end up looking it up in the rulebook every time it comes up anyway!
