Hello All

This might seem like a stupid question, but we are a bunch of dudes getting into epic without the guidance of anyone that knows how to play.

So, up to now we have been placing our armies at the short edges of the table (ie: the furthest distance from the other side). Looking at a great battle report which includes loads of pics I see the armies are set up on the long edges (so shorter distance between the armies).

This has resulted in the first player to move usually is at a disadvantage since he usually will not be able to engage as he moves his units foreward.

Have we been doing this all wrong?

Cheers

In the standard Tournament Scenario, there are two possible deployment methods, either along the long edges of the table, or corner to corner. Effectively, yes, you've been playing it wrong.

Yes, kinda!

You have 2 choices for deployment using the GT scenario from section 6 of the rules..

Option 1 - Your base edge is one of the long sides of the table, selected by the army with the highest strategy rating.
Option 2 - A corner of the table. Your deployment edge is then and L shaped zone extending half way up the short and long edge from your selected corner.

In both cases the deployment zone is 15cm deep. Hope that makes sense?

It's fine, feel free to ask questions, we all have lots when we're getting into a game and it's harder for you guys because you're figuring it out between you rather than getting taught by a more veteran player.

You have been doing that wrong, setting up on the short edges would be really far apart. It works like this - the player with the highest strategy rating specified at the top of their army list (e.g. Space Marines have 5 compared to Orks 3 or Imperial Guard's 2) gets to choose where to deploy. He can either choose either of the long edges of his choice to deploy on or can choose to deploy in one of the four corners of the table (where he would then have a L shaped deployment zone running to the mid points of each table side and his opponent would have the same in the opposite corner). The majority of the time people go for a long edge deployment, but occasionally corner deployment can be better with how the terrain is or a good tactic with certain armies e.g. if against Feral Orks (as they're slow and it then takes longer for them to get to you) or when playing drop space marines (to know the enemy will be bunched up in a smaller area to pre-target your drop locations and orbital barrages).
