Post subject:  Garrison - what is it?

Hi All

I have found references in various places about garrisoning infantry, but I have not found anything that explains what it is.

Is it an action in it's own right or is it simply a word people use to reflect when their infantry is to stay put and guard a spot, usually on overwatch?

Thanks

It's when you're playing the Tournament Scenario, you're allowed to start some of your slower formations clustered around one of the objective markers in your half of the table.

In a tournament scenario formations that meet any one of the following criteria may garrison:
* containing no more than one unit with speed over 15cm.
* half or more the units have Scout.
* containing unit(s) with speed 0.

Garrisoning formations can deploy with one stand within 15cm of any objective in your table half and the others in coherency with them. Up to two garrisoning formations may start the game on overwatch (and count as being in cover till they fire if they are infantry).

It's described on page 125 of the rulebook.

It allows formations such as foot ork warbands (often with a single flak wagon for AA support) or SM Land Speeders to start the game further forward that regular deployment. Also, because you deploy garrisoning formations within 15cm of an objective in your half, your opponent can sometimes influence that a little e.g. placing them very close towards your table edge or both on one side of the table, in order to influence where you can garrison.

Your looking for section 6.1.5 (page 125 of the rule book) for the details for garrisons.

Add to GlynG's list of criteria that a formation must have no War Engines.

I think that's in the 2008 errata or FAQ's.

To be clear, the "no WE" restriction only applies to the 15cm movement speed criteria.

You can garrison WEs under the scout criteria or the 0cm speed criteria.

Really. So a hypothetical Stormtrooper Platoon in a Gorgon could garrison? What about a unit of a Baneblade and a Salamander? It's a wrinkle I had never considered.

Yep. A Grenadier Platoon with Gorgon from the Krieg list can actually garrison, ditto an Ork Warband from the core list with Battlefortress(es) and a silly amount of additional Kommandos (this latter option is a very poor choice though so rarely seen). I guess we would have to assume the vehicle to be dug in ahead of the rest of the army, covered in camo netting or something. Your example of the hypothetical Baneblade formation would need 3 Salamanders, not one to garrison.

Are you sure? It specifically states "units", not "starting DC". That indicates that one WE unit and a unit with Scout could garrison, no?

It probably indicates that nobody had really thought it through about scouts and war engines. The warband with kommandos and battlefortresses was probably the only we/scout formation in existence at the time?

The WE would count as 3 units. To copy and paste from the War Engines rules section: "For most rules purposes, a war engine counts as being ‘worth’ a number of units equal to its starting damage capacity".

Right-o. I thought there was a discussion recently where that seemed to be restricted, but it appears either I or the discussion was wrong. Perhaps both.
