Okay, so now I have been told that the E:A rules have effectively killed off the game, and that I should be playing NetEpic.

What the hell is NetEpic, and is there a bigger following for that ruleset?

Well there is also NetE:A which is basically E:A but with support from the community instead of GW.

The biggest following is for Epic:A, followed by NetEpic, which is a spruced up variant of 2nd edition. Epic:A is 4th edition. Typically Epic 40k is regarded as having killed it.

Not sure who told you Netepic is the most popular; EA is the most widely played version

A brief summary:-
Epic has gone through four variants
#1 was considered over-simplistic by GW
#2 more complex but still popular. GW decided there was still room for improvement
#3 was the version that killed a lot of support. Fans of #2 created NetEpic
#4 Epic Armageddon (E:A) is the latest and arguably the best. Mainly supported by fans in this site

Right, good to hear.

Thanks for your help. One more thing while I have you. I stumbled across Datafaxes that had been updated for E:A, which I would like to download for nostalgia's sake, anyone know of where I can find these...

IIRC, ‘Datafax’ is a term generally used in Epic #1 and #2 (NetEpic) to refer to the unit capabilities and formation composition. In E:A, these can be found in the rules section 5.0 and 6.0 respectively. The E:A rules and other usefull information can be downloaded from the Games Workshop site, Specialist Games section. These cover Space Marines, Orks and Imperial Guard.

Fans have expanded these to cover many other Races and army variants which can be found as follows:-

  • Net-ERC Army Compendium (the on-line Epic Rules Committee for this forum)
  • EPIC-UK lists (used in the UK tournaments)
  • EPIC-FR forum including their rules and lists (used by the French and in the annual Belgian tournament)
  • The two fan produced supplements for Raiders and Siege
Other groups, notably in Australia and New Zealand, produced the ‘Handbook’ which was an earlier attempt to bring the rules and lists back into a single source.

E:A might not be getting much support from GW, but the community is active.

Yeah, I know they don't really exist for E:A, but somewhere on the net I stumbled upon some that had been re-done for E:A.

Trying to find them again but no luck..

I believe this is what your looking for ---> http://epicarmycard.com/Epic.htm

These are not current compared to the NetEA lists but close to it.

I had the same reaction :)

For the OP who might not know AT/SM (#1 ruleset) :

#1 was a very detailed system, because the first Epic game was a Titan only game, so it used very few models, but a lot of details were provided. The system became very complicated and cumbersome when vehicles and infantry were added. There were some very nice feature in it however, and one could say that E:A is mostly the offspring of that first system (AP/AT values for example) and epic:40K (blast markers, abstraction of some rules).

AP/AT values, blast markers, abstraction of some rules... , just the things that make the `engine´ of Epic:A the best in the history of Epic.

BTW, those Datafaxes are great!!!
