Post subject:  BM in Assault Resolution

In my last game (Eldar vs SM), I assaulted a broken SM formation (3 units) with my Jetbikes (they had 3 blast markers).

I destroyed one of the SM units, my opponent claimed that since there were only 2 SM units left in the formation, it only had 2 BM (for resolution purposes), so he had the +1 to assault resolution for having less blast markers. So... if I destroy units in a broken formation during the assault, do they reduce the number of BM (actually helping them in soma cases)?? :sulk:

For a start marines count as having 2 BM for every unit when broken. Not sure the actual answer to the question. I suspect it's that they would count as only having twice the number of units worth of BM, so if you have more than that they get the +1.

But they only count half BM's for Assaults, which brings it back to 2.

As to interpretation, I would say the Marine Player's assertion is correct. No mention is made "at the start of the combat". Inspiring doesn't work that way, nor does outnumbering.

Personally, I think "Is Broken" should trump "Has more Blast Markers" for Assault resolution. A single broken model, fearless or not, should not have an advantage over a Uge Warband/maxed IG Mechanized, with 3 BM's because of this rule.

BMs are determined at the beginning of combat and do not change until after resolution.  You don't take BMs for kills during assault and a broken formation does not "lose" BMs when it loses units.
