The title says it all, really.

An Ork Warband engages Marine Devastators in CC, 5 big guns are within 15cm of the Devastators and have 3BMs. Do the big guns get a)5FF or b)3FF?

On a side note, if the Devastators wipe out the warband in CC (I know, not very likely), will the big guns still get to take their supporting fire?

FF is never surpressed, whether initial FF or supporting fire.

+1 zombocom.

Also on the second question, if you wipe out the opposition formation then the assault stops there and support does not take place.

One more thing, the supporting formation will get a blast marker for being in range to support and on the losing side, despite the fact that it didn't actually fire.

Finally, any formations belonging to the losing side that
were in a position to have lent support (ie, they were
within 15cms of an enemy unit in the assault) receive one
Blast marker each, even if they did not actually lend
support. These Blast markers represent the detrimental
effect on morale of seeing friends defeated in an assault

Is the text from the rule book. So if your supporting formation was within 15cms of an enemy in the assault you take a BM.

You only check if a unit is in range to support after the regular CC and FF attacks have been resolved. So in your example the Devastators would no longer be in range and therefore would not lend support and would not a take a blast marker if they lost.

To the original question, you get 5x Big gunz in the assault; as Zombocom says units are not suppressed in an assault, but the BMs do count in the assault resolution.

'Supporting' formations may not actually be able to kill enemy units for a number of reasons (being Broken, having no LoS, having no FF capability, no longer having enemy in range etc) but this does not matter - the 'supporting' formation gets a BM formation if it is on the losing side and was in position to support at the start of the assault.

I agree with Ginger. It's the position at the start of the assault that matters. If you go in with only a token force to the assault hoping to win with support fire the downside should be maximised in my opinion.

I agree as well.  In range should be based on the beginning of the assault.

That makes sense to me, too.

that's curious, I didn't realise that - so the more BMs and 2x BMs is calculated on ALL the fms that have taken part in the assault, not just the original protagonists?

No, BMs only count for the units actually in the assault, not those supporting fire.

I think Ginger was referring to the participating formation.  BMs on the participating formations do not suppress but do count for resolution.  BMs on supporting formations do not suppress and do NOT count for resolution.

Also, it's just "no BMs" and "more BMs" that give mods.  There is no "2x BMs" modifier.
