Hi guys,

Had a game at the weekend vs Justinel and his Orks, this time. I swear no matter what armies we use he can always seem to pip me to victory - this time by 1 objective!

I had 2 Thawks, 1 empty from start, 1 with 2 assault marines in. My full hawk ground attacked a big mob of boys and managed to survive. Later in the turn I landed my empty Thawk beside the surviving marines. All ok so far.

Now, can my assault marines embark in the end phase and exit in the 2nd Thawk?

I think so. They will embark into the 2nd thunderhawk in it's landing action, if they're within 5". It can then disengage in the end phase, carrying them off board for the next turn.

Would it not be 5/15cm as they are assault marines? I know that when ground attacking assault/jump pack units can effectively get an extra 10cm as they pile out before it has landed giving the WE a chance to FF from behind.

All the assault marines would need to be within 5cm of the thunderhawk. You are using its activation to 'scoop up' the marines. They have already had their activation and don't get any extra movement.

One more point, the marines embark when the thunderhawk lands. They then sit in the grounded thunderhawk until the end phase, then the Thunderhawk can leave.

Jump troops get extra disembarkation distance when they leap out of the still landing plane. They don't get extra movement to jump into it while it's still in the air - they'd get cooked in the engines or squashed against the front plate *laughs*

For what it is worth, there are two ways of embarking troops onto an air transport.
1) Under 4.2.7, the air transport can activate and 'land' on the troops which embark imediately. The Air transport then shoots if it can.

2) Once the air transport is landed, troops can move to it, embarking at the end of their movement under 3.3 WE transport. Unless the air transport has special dispensation (Ork Landa), these troops cannot fire out of the transport so the activation ends.

So it is perfectly acceptable for THawk #1 to assault (using the Assault marines), for THawk #2 to fly in and pick up the Assault marines, and for a third formation (eg Tacticals) to move into THawk #1; and have both THawks to fly off at the end of the turn ready for turn #2.

The golden rule to remember here is that if you CONSOLIDATE into the air transport, this is deemed to happen during the end-phase and replaces disengagement - so the air transport would remain landed until the end of the following turn, but any other kind of move is acceptable, including withdrawal move(s) of broken troops.

Landa's don't have a special rule that allows troops to fire out.
