I ran the artwork competition as follows:
I posted on several different forums about the artwork, referred them to a single thread here on Tactical Command (so people didn't think there were multiple competitions), and threw out some ideas as to what we were looking for.

It still wasn't enough artwork coming in, however, so I started reaching out to artists on the web and personally emailing each one of them. I probably sent out over a hundred individualized emails and PMs to various folks. Some art was made for the book, other pieces were already done up and appropriate for the book.
Once the artwork came in, we were supposed to judge it and post the winner. My comrades were being difficult, however, and refused to score some pieces or simply didn't respond.
So I took the top 10 cumulative scores that I had and
put them out here for a vote.
Winners were then announced.Ultimately, I received a lot of pieces but they came in after the competition was over. I don't think you will have the shortage of artwork that we did though. We were dealing with an original storyline and two races that had unit types most 40K artists were unfamiliar with. Black Crusades is a topic well covered in books and games and as such has inspired many people already.
You'll need some prizes, so if you were to run a competition I'd start looking through that ample stash of goodies at home and see what you can part ways with. Copies of the printed book themselves is a good one to have. It adds up with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize winners though. The copies of
Raiders alone cost me over a hundred dollars (books + shipping), 1 phalanx of Necron Warriors (worth about $20-25), plus a Warbarque and Corey's Pylon. Fortunately Juddski forfeited his models otherwise it would have been worse!
