A discussion came up in a recent game and I was curious how others play this aspect of the game. The question is specifically regarding using BP templates.
My understanding (and I'm not assuming that I'm correct) is:
1. The turn that was nominated for the spacecraft appearing arrives, and the model of the ship is placed somewhere on your baseline.
2. You declare where the bombardment template(s) hit using the ?previously written coordinates (from what I am reading, exact physical measurements, i.e. 40cm up, 75cm right)
3. Roll for attacks and results
A question came up that, since we can pre-measure everything, that all you really need to do is measure where you want the template to hit and declare those coordinates or if you're really interested in productivity, just lay down the template. I was under the impression that you had to write them down first, then basically hope someone enters into the bombardment area.
Thoughts?

We don't use pre measurements. SO we guess the distancen where the OB should hit.
Remember that you place the ship onthe board at thebeginning of the game. From this position you measure where the OB (and planetfall) will occur. So, yes, ypu canstil lsay 60cm straigt vorward from the model, but if you do this everytime you opponent can easily guess where in the path the spaceship is pointing to the OB will go down and avoid this area.

Since the spot you strike is recorded at the start of battle can't see why pre-measuring is much of use . Sure you may pre-measure all you want but when you record the co-ordinates no units are on board.

As the OB can strike at any place , if you put the Model on Table or not, as long as you have written some fixed coordinates (X,Y) on it e.g. 60cm from left table edge and 45cm from bottom table edge. Putting the Model on table is IMO for optical reasons at best.

Look at the SM1 Off Board Support rules ... We use them and not the "E:A buy BFG system" ...

@Steele: No the coordinates must be measured in relation to the position of the spacrecraft model.

I always read the coordinates point as simply a reference, a note if you will. Not a guess[eg my cannon will fire 29" at that middle troll...], rather, you pick the spote on the table, and using a clear and concise coordinate system note where on the table that is. It isn't supposed to be 'guesswork' by my reckoning, simply insurance for your opponent that you aren't always changing your mind about things[and thus cheating].

So, basically, people are interpreting the instructions in a number of ways, but it appears that there is agreement on the fact that you write down coordinates and are held to that plot.

Yes. ALL the plotting of spacecraft actions is done before the game starts. That includes the spacecraft entry point. You don't get to "slide" the entry point for the spacecraft along the table edge in order to adjust where your plotted bombardment point lands.
Incidentally, we've just been using a plot based on the game board. We stopped using the spacecraft models altogether because placing a spacecraft at the edge of the board resulted in several of them falling to the floor and ending up in pieces. They aren't really needed anyway.
