My friends and I are going to play a big battle of EA in a couple of weeks (about 12000 points per side) and I was thinking of using some additional rules to make it more special.

My first thought was to use strategic assets as those found in apocalyspse 40K, or at least very similar.

Anyone tried them in epic? Any rule ideas for big battles?

Thanks  :vD

You don't need anything additional, to be honest. At that points level, it's likely players will be fielding spacecraft (providing orbital bombardments and planetfall options).

For our big games, I have thought about stretching the game out by up to two turns and not checking Victory Conditions 'til Turn 4, but then I haven't played enough big games to have a real opinion on that.

What I can tell you is that BIG GAMES ARE AWESOME.  :D

Speaking of spacecraft in large games...

Spacecraft in all lists I know of is 0-1. You normally get to use additional 0-x slots per - what - 5000 points or fraction thereof?

And only one spaceship can arrive per turn.

What do you do when each player brings 3 spaceships in a 12000 point game?

A modification we use is that maximums are multiplied for every 5000 points or part thereof that is used. So at 10'000 points two supreme commanders, two spaceships with two allowed per turn. Etc.

No other mods needed for large games though I think. Except quicker if multiple players on each side with simultaneous activations.

At any points level, the game really only works with one spacecraft and one Supreme Commander.

And just talking semantics: having more than Supreme Commander makes neither of them "Supreme", doesn't it?  :)

Not sure what the problem with multiple spacecraft or commanders is? You just allow multiple spacecraft each turn rather than one and each supreme commander is in charge of a division of the army, rather than the whole thing. Works ok for us anyway!  :;):

Regarding Hena and Mark's points: Yeah, I'll concede those. One SC per player, and all of your own side's ships arriving on the same turn would work, I s'pose.  :)

I think that multiple spacecraft is really abusable. Play with three Eldar on one side with all bring Dragonships on turn one would mean 9 templates on your deployment zone. Marines and Chaos could drop enough forces in pods to cover the deployment as well. I seriously would not change the rules allowing more Spaceships per turn *shrug*.

Well presumably the game would be @15000 points a side? So bigger table and deployment zone, not to mention armies. So why not scale the orbital stuff proportionally too?

If it was 3 ships at half that amount of points on a small table it might be different.

The SCs wont be a problem. We are going to play several players per side so each player will have its own. We are not going to play in a cheesy way, just a battle for fun so ther won't be many spaceships. It will be hard to hit with an orbital bombardment because the battlefield will be 240x180  :_( ...

We were thinking of something like this:

Astartes (4500 pts)
Imperial Guard (4500 pts)
Tau Empire (3000 pts)

VS.

Chaos (6000 pts)
Orks (6000 pts)

Any ideas for objectives or do you simply use the tournament rules for this kind of battles?

Thanks  :agree:

Just standard tournament rules should work fine. Expect the objectives to be hotly contested!!

Not sure how you will do 2 vs 3 players in activations but should be able to work something out I'm sure.

I would perhaps increase the amount of objective markers...BUT: you could only claim the end of game objectives (victory conditions such as BTS, Blitzkrieg) IF twice the required amount of objective markers are held : i.e. to claim blitzkrieg then you must hold BOTH of the markers that your opponents placed at the start of the game. I would also adjust BTS to having to destroy the TWO most expensive units.
I wouldn't change 'They Shall not Pass' (or is it 'Hold the Line'?!)
It's a shame you can't find a bigger table though.
