I'm just curious, but if you assault with a warmachine, can you use the barge move to 'push' formations into being intermingled, and thus assault extra things?

Or am I being wildly optimistic...

Nope. Intermingling is declared before any assault moves are made, based on the position of units at that time.

I would have thought that this is wildly optimistic myself.  As Zombocom pointed out, intermingling is declared before you actually move into assault, so I wouldn't have thought that your idea is feasible, since War Engines barge units out the way once you actually make your engage move.

Also with barging in an assault you still have to adhere to the ZoC rule.

Once a ZoC is entered during an engage action you have to move directly towards that unit so it would be difficult to barge through a formation without having to move to nearer units from the formation already involved in the engage.
