Hello.
I have been looking into war gaming for the first time in my life. I became super excited about epic and the large scale battles at a lower cost only to find that the (only?)gaming store in Santa Fe New Mexico has no epic players. 40K and Fantasy are the only two that really have kicked off.
The owner of the store also doubts people will switch over or get interested.
So as a result I am getting into warhammer fantasy and 40k.
Is there hope? Any ideas? Anyone in Santa Fe play epic? or should i just go with 40k and fantasy?

A- Point out how much more tactical the game is.

B- Get two armies and offer games to people.

C- End up playing 40k.  :))  :p

Your best bet is to see if you can get people's interest by offering them a demo game. $20 and a solid week or so of effort will provide you with enough to run a 1000 point demo games with marines.

I'd post of the store's forum if they have one or otherwise their bulletin board (they should at least have one of those). Also, ask around on TMP.  A lot of hard core off the main stream gamers troll those boards.  I'm willing to be there are a few in NM too.

And don't forget to bug your friends to play.

B is what I'm in the process of doing, though a bit more complicated in that I'm building both IG and Marines armies.

You made the right call, I built SM and Eldar.  IG I hear is the easiest to play, so now I'm ordering an IG army as well.  Especially after being inspired by Levinas' guard army I looked at yesterday.  But I think I went too far and already have an ork, tau, and tyranids sitting in boxes awaiting their turn on the painting table.  Hey you gotta have options, and I figure every army is an option for everyone.

Option D - mix up 40k and Epic in a campaign

:vo :vo  How good does that make me feel!

I went for option B quite recently and bought two armies (IG and Ork) and convinced a couple of my friends to play that way. Epic really is a good system and so once people have given it a go there's a good chance they'll want to play again.

The only downside with epic is that people don't think that it caters to the painter-converter-collector so well as 28mm games and I guess they're right but as this forum shows there's ample opportunity to get creative.

I had one guy to play with here in Allentown, PA a year ago.  The game store organized a Specialist-Games Day with BFG, Necromunda, etc..  I ran the Epic table and in a single day attracted seven people to play Epic again and a few more who are interested.  Some are old time players, some are new players.

Best bet is to set up a table and just play it in front of people.  Be familiar with the rules and be able to show them the game mechanics.  My favorite 'selling point' on Epic is that almost everything that you do in the game is on the last page of the book.  Action types, Blast Marker effects, Assault Resolution, et al.  The thickness of the rulebook can be intimidating but if you show people the back page, and that the core rules all fit into section 1 (show them) it will seem more appealing IMO.

Definitely do B.  Also, see if there's not a forum for your locale related to gaming.  It might be that there's some "Sante Fe Gamers" site or something out there.  It might even be Role Playing Game related rather than wargaming related.  If so, it probably will still be fine to post in their "player's wanted" type section.  It might be a yahoo group.  It might be connected to a college or university if there is one near by.

Also, there may be a 40k related Sante Fe specific web forum or email list, yahoogroup, whatever.  Ask there too.  See if anyone is interested in a demo game.

When we started out Blood Bowl league we advertised it on ebay (as an item for sale) and found a few new players that way. That said, there are a lot more BB players about than there are epic players.

Wasn't there a site called "Spielers" or something like that where you listed your location and gaming interests?
