The only problem was that in the old rules, each side placed 5 objectives within roughly 30cms of their opponents table edge, meaning that there was nothing in the middle and making objective holding fairly difficult.
Sounds like an objective problem. So... stop it. Change your objective placement and make it appropriate for your army (or armies). Bunching up all the objectives in one spot like that is only optimal for a relatively fast, durable and assault-capable army. It's suicide for certain kinds of forces.
If you have a "shoot the snot out of your opponent" army, then don't place your objectives deep in their territory. You're not going to get there because you will be single-moving or using Sustain Fire. Bring your objectives back near mid-board and force the enemy to come at you just to cover their own objectives.
If you have a fast army, throw your objectives way off to the edges where a slow, shooty army can't cover them without spreading out. Bunch up to concentrate on a small portion of the enemy, planning on scattering out late game to grab objectives.
