not a very exciting picture you may think, but this is in fact from one of my first games of Epic Armageddon....

hopefully will have an Epic Armageddon section on Felix's Gaming Pages soon

though soon could be next year or even 2005  ???

At least your are painted! My first Armageddon game was documented here:

Epic:A Battle Report

We ran around searching for anything that could be used, in any colours or of any types! :)

aahh the unpainted figure syndrome

myself and my friend Simon have an unwritten rule, only painted miniatures allowed on the table (and a slightly more strick unwritten admendment) only well-painted miniatures allowed on the table - therefore the single colour Space Marine Rhino is not allowed

the nearest I have come to breaking the unwritten rules was with a Warhammer 40K battle

If you check out the full report

Warhammer 40K Battle Report

You will see some "nearly" painted Orks

Ha! With my speed at painting, I would never get a game in. We have an unwritten rule that we should not use an unpainted piece if we can avoid it, even if it means changing the force. If we have loads of troops, that is what we take before we look at unpainted vehicles. This system works quite well, as it means that we have fairly balance troops painted, but dont go short of a game.

I think that I am still painting up some plastic Marines from 40K (Mk VI), and I have an Eldar Wraithship from Space Fleet and four beetlebacks unconstructed, almost ready for their undercoat!  :o

Hi!

I also ascribe to the "play with painted" miniatures philosophy. I even go as far to let people use my stuff if theirs isn't painted yet.

The funny thing is, while I like playing mini-games, I really dislike painting. I know its wierd, but I find it tedious, boring and really tiresome. While I like the resuts of my handi-work, it takes months or years to get into the painting mood.

Matters have been made worse since I found reliable painters for hire. If their was one game related thing I could wish for, it would be to really enjoy painting.

That and the ability to NOT buy more miniatures than I need, but thats another thread.

well, as i solo game at the moment, its a case of play an be damned if their painted  :) Most are painted to what i call table top standard, some are well painted and a few still shiny silver.

ive played wargames since the early 60s when my gran took me to a wargames do in birmingham, where the gods of wargaming where playing, featherstone, wise and grant. bought my airfix and hinchcliffe figures and a bellona cityscape board and was hooked, never painted a figure for about 10 years but boy did i enjoy the games i had.

i think as long as its not a tournament then why bother if your figures are painted at that moment, ive seen kids reduced to tears at GW stores because someone has said they cant play because its unpainted or not painted properly.

i play then paint, having a coat of paint on my figures doesnt stop me from rolling abysmal dice nor my imperial guard running at the smell of a khorne jugger :(

I understand the desire to have painted figures on the table. However, the way to encourage someone to paint an army is not to ban them from playing until it is done. Rather, if you have someone with an unpainted army, you offer to set aside an hour from your game time each week to help paint their army. Makes it go faster and they are greatful for the help.

Ban someone from playing and you may loose them from the hobby. Help them and you will gain a friend for life.

I have to say, although many people dislike painting, to me it is really satisfying to finish painting a quality model that you have spent ages on- at the weekend I fially finished painting a Ramillies for a mate (who doesn't really paint), it looked excellent and was really satisfying :) ... We then had a game of BFG, me using it with my Imperial fleet against his Chaos, and I won my second BFG game against him.

This then inspired me to finish my Swords, and I'l be doing the rest of my escorts and cruisers over the coming week. :D

So, Jimbo, is this game going to get a report for your site?

Were there any other pics of the game?

If there is one thing I really really need, its a digital camera.  Of coarse I need a decent computer too.

alas there will be no game report

I was too busy interpreting the rules to take notes and pics and the vast majority of the pics I took were blurred... ah well maybe next time

a quick overview for this forum perhaps

We too identical forces - didn't bother to look at the Army Lists, basically based it on what came out of the gaming box at the time (and they were all painted).

6 Land Raiders
6 Rhinos each carrying 10 Tactical Marines
3 Vindicators
6 Dreadnoughts

Basically I thrashed Simon, he was left with just a few Vindicators... the new assault rules are very deadly (and I quite like them). I thought the firing process would be longdrawn and complicated, it wasn't. I do like the iniative phase and alternate actions, makes you think on your feet more.

Do I like it more than or less than Epic40K, well I haven't decided...

I'm using a Warlord in games of 4000+ pts., but I don't think I've quite figured out how to get the most out of it.  (I field it cause it's really cool, but I could make it work for me, then all the better).

My thoughts for its use include:
1) turn guns on enemy tanks
2) use to hold objectives on my side of the board (too far to run to get to oppenents side)
3) double move often
4) move to within 15 cm of a formation I want to engage with another unit.

Issues I have with it:
1) sooo slow!  hard to get him where you need him
2) could use longer gun ranges...see issue 1
3) can only target one formation with shooting attacks, sometimes overkill (but not the way mine performs)

Have any of you got some good tips on Titan use?

With regards to your "issues" with the Warlord, remember that JJ increased the range of the TLD and GB to 60cm.

Really?  I've just been using the stats from the rule book.  Long range guns make sooo much more sense!

Ummm, where should I have looked to learn this?
Thanks

It will become official when the rules update occurs (if it hasnt happened already).

Are you using the warlord in a space marine army or in an imperial guard army?

Havent used them with Guard, but with marines, i have found the warlord to be too slow to be much use - although they do have a nice a psyche-out effect.

Personally, i use warhounds as they are quick enough to keep up with my troops and they are far more flexible.

If you are going to use a Warlord, IG or SM, and even if you do use the increased ranged weapons, then may I offer some of the following suggestions.

(1) Deploy it in the exact center of your deployment zone, 15cms up from the edge.
(From here it can easily move into either flank as needed, or better yet follow into number two below)

(2) March it on the first turn up to the exact center of the table.
(From this position it covers 1/2 to 3/4 of the battle area making it real difficult for an opponent to avoid. Also it can quickly move into either flank as needed. It is best if you let the enemy commit themselves first before re-deploying into a flank.)

(3) It is best placed at the junction of two of your formations.
(In this position it will get to use all of it's combat power in support of these two formations. Any attack on these two formations is going to fall into the Warlords sphere of influence.)

(4) Use it offensively, it is a waste of the investment in points to use it defensively.
(No opponent worth their salt is going to place their Take & Holds close enough to each other, or the Blitz, to make it possible for the Warlord to claim two of them defensively. Also no opponent is going to just waltz up to the thing, and if it is standing still, then they can easily avoid it. Offensive is the forte' of the Warlord, or don't get one.)

In my case I use it at the junction of two formations, and then the three of them move directly on the enemy objectives daring them to try and stop them. It forces the enemy to come out and play or lose the battle. Do not underestimate the firepower/combat power of this WE, not to mention the psyhc power, so use it, or lose it

Hope this helps,

Jaldon :oo
