Not sure why but I was thinking of trying to come up with some generic Imperial detachments that you could add to any Imperial army.

The idea would be that they would all be relatively inexpensive (250 points or so) and would not be too powerful but just an excuse to add some flavour/character to an army and act as an excuse to paint up some minis.

I was thinking of:
Inquisitor's Retinue
Adeptus Mechanicus Enginseer
Grey Knights
Imperial Priest

Anyone think of any other detachments that would be useful in a game but also just fun?

I'm thinking of a detachment that would have a few units with it (mostly to make it have a bigger visual presence on the table) but I guess that there is no reason why it also couldn't be single unit attachments.

Any idea where I might find fluff about these two?

There might have been something on the old Armageddon3 website, but they're just line entries in the Imperial Forces list in the EPIC:A rulebook.

They *sound* cool though!

I am actually planning on doing a Legendary formations article, in which unique formations are available for different armies as part of your allies section.

I have three imperial ones readyish and 2 Ork ones, and all these look like contenders as mor eimperial ones.  Shame I can't think of any other xenos/traitor ones.

You could create some. Who cares if there's no "official" fluff for them.

I just don'tknow what to create.

For the imperials I have a living saint and her seraphim body guard, the tanith first and only and a rough draft of a penal legion formation

Orks I have a big mek warband filled with Burna boyz, tank busta etc and a blitz brigade that gets to "fix" enemy tanks which they destroy in an engage.

Each formation has a simple special rule or just lots of character.

I just can't think what to do for other races (though the meks warband are blood axe freebootas, so will fight for almost anyone)

There should be a whole host of 'remembrancers' and other administration and scribes.  :D

A formation of clerks for the 41st Millenium!

Hav you looked at the Wh40k Apocalypse datasheets? They should give you plenty of inspiration.

I have done the Space Marines one so far. Next would be Imperial Guard but at present i don't have the leisure to do it.
