I've been busy over Easter - as well as a wedding I managed to fit in two EA games!!  I've done some reports for my website, but due to limited bandwidth it might be good if 'Incoming' could grab them for the the next issue?

Excellent work as always Markconz, but haven't you heard about trees? Or hills? ?:D ?I noticed in your battle reports that you seem to have so much open space and I am curious as to how you don't get bored. . .

Not that everyone has to play like me, but just about everytime I play I have some kind of water obsticle, like a river or lake, bridge, hills, combination of rock formations, and lots of trees. Then I normally group the buildings to form little towns with a odd one here and there. The last thing I want is too much open space or a straight line going 3 feet without bumping into something.

I think the more terrain you use, the better the game. Use too little and you might as well just move everyone to the center of the board and start rolling hit dice.

If you are using more terrain than this you must be giving a big advantage to close combat armies Gandalf!  :O
By E40k standards and other battle reports I have seen, this table is very cluttered! Most terrain pieces were in firefight/assault range of each other where it counted around the objectives - ie there was very little 'no man's land' around to give advantage to shooters.

E40k random terrain generators give D3 terrain pieces per 2' square (IIRC). This table had 20 pieces,  or over 3 per 2' square (some of these were quarter/half size bits, but they were all LOS blocking).

I do actually have trees and hills in some other battle reports!  :D  However, to be honest Gandalf, yes I do prefer lots of ruins and industrial buildings, bunkers etc! It looks like we are actually fighting for something other than an apple orchard!  (Though I do keep forgetting to use my river sections!). Also, I like to vary the terrain - so that some battles are purely rural, others urban like this one, others with nothing but wilderness with an outpost (though I don't have enough trees for the forest templates to do this for a battle report yet!) etc... I also have a massive amount of new hills awaiting painting and flocking, so expect a report with nothing but these at some stage too!

I wonder how cluttered other peoples battles are?  Maybe because I am from New Zealand which has a very low population density I am used to big open areas and this is reflected in my terrain?!  :D  Do other people think this battle has a small amount of terrain?!  ???

Wow this is an interesting theory. I don't think a gaming table is complete without a river (and maybe a lake as well). I live in Tampa, Florida, around lots of water, and since I am always around it maybe that influences my tables as well. . . I also think it adds color too and it makes bridges pretty important objectives. Florida is pretty flat too, and I just happen to play with only a few hills. . .

I'm wondering if those who live in cities like New York play on tables with nothing but a ton of buildings. . .

I guess I just try to get every kind of feature on a table. . .

Nice AAR! ?

I do like a lot of terrain, as I said, but sometimes I'd just cover the board with craters!
And a few other bitz, like a M/Machine crashed shuttle craft, etc.

But we like to vary the environment. We'd stay away from huge urban areas, and prefer, the countryside like rural Europe, with streams, crops, small hamlets, ancient/alien ruins, etc, scattered about. Or a desert or jungle, with the occasional ruin(s) and/or village.

But we've had big towns in the mix too. If I use all my urban structures/building from all iterations/sources, we'd have a rather large town, but never did it, yet. Large urban areas tend to limit maneuver and it becomes, very congested like we see in Mark's pics and AFVs are on top of each other and are quite vulnerable to infantry attacks. A situation that we have seen recently in Iraq.

May I also recommend the AT-1/SM-1 random scenario system, we swear by it. The other systems, SM-2, E-40K and E-A are O.K. but are not as good as the AT-1/SM-1 system, IMO.

I remember the SM-2 and now even the E-A system, somewhat, reminds us of an Easter Egg Hunt! ?

I think Jervis did that because it "forces" the "bumbling" players to do something other than line up - shoot once and run into the middle and use use ranged weapons as clubs and vehicles as jalopies in a Demo Derby! (IMO) :;): ?

Well again, take a look at the AT-1/SM-1 system. And I didn't mean to say any of you are bumbling commanders, but I've never played any of you so you may think the same of me!

Cheers! :)

Great stuff Marko- looks like you have a perfect amount of terrain imo, although I'm also one of the 'more is better' bunch! :;):
