To put it short: is AA fire allowed at aircraft making a disengage move or not? The rules are a bit ambiguous. 4.2.4 states that AA attacks are made after the planes have made their approach move but before they attack. This would clearly restrict the AA attack to action phase. However, the same rule then goes on (in the next paragraph) about how AA units without ovarwatch or sustained fire orders get a -1 penalty to their to-hit rolls in the end phase. Furthermore, 4.2.7 says aircraft can receive a blast marker during disengagement move which clearly means they can be shot at as I can't think of any other reason a unit can get a blast marker during a move. My guess is they can be shot at and 4.2.4 just omits the disengage move for some reason. But what do the great gurus say? |

They can be shot at, but only if that AA gun/weapon has not already shot at that particular aircraft this turn. |

The air rules are a little confusing, and there are intentions to revise them. In summary both Aircraft and Ground units may fire on enemy aircraft after the approach move, but only Ground units may fire at aircraft making a disengagement move (check 4.2.4 at the top of page 51). However, this allows the despised 'Flak rush' of ground units that were unable to prevent the ground attack, subsequently being moved into range of the enemy disengagement flight path to shoot at them as they leave. As an intial step to fixing the 'Flak rush', in the Alpha Handbook (which I think you were referring to), an additional modifier of -1 is applied in the end phase for Ground units that are firing, if they have moved during the turn. As E&C says, each Ground unit can only fire once at an enemy aircraft formation in the turn (either in the approach move or the end phase but not both). Also aircraft only get one BM for being fired on in the approach move and another BM in the End phase no matter how many formations / units were shooting. |

Third paragraph 4.2.4 (my emphasis): Ground units that are armed with AA weapons can shoot at enemy aircraft as they move past them. To represent this, they may shoot at an aircraft formation that moved within their weapon range during their approach or disengagement move, even if the aircraft is no longer within weapon range when the attack is made. Attacks made against disengaging aircraft are resolved when the aircraft reaches the edge of the table, before it is removed to ?fly back to base?. As Ginger said, the -1 modifier shooting at disengaging aircraft if ground AA is moving is the latest proposal to this section. See the handbook in my signature (I notice I need to fix the font in 4.24 ![]() |

Thanks. The sentence in the third paragraph quoted above somehow eluded my eyes. ![]() And I am using the handbook already. I don't want to lug around a pile of errata/changes. ![]() |
