I just hate over using the overwatch tatic, not because it is sound doctrine (cuz it IS against the Eldar) but because it tends to lead to even more static games than the IG are used to already.
my 2cents,

iblisdrax

The trick is to use some shooty units in overwatch while maneuvering with fast units. Of course, this is nearly always harder to implement than it sounds. Still, when it's working it makes for memorable games.  :)

Hi!

All you really need is some units to make the Eldar player WORRY about retaliation. Then the rest of your force can do the job. Its sort of what I do with chaos. I bring a LOB just becuase I know its such an inviting target for the opponent who will spend the firepower on its, while my ground troops close the breech to engange him..... :;):

Yep ! ?Mojarn is correct ... fire and maneuver ... It can be done successfully in Epic especially now with E:A "activation rules" ! We've been doing since '90. ? :;):  Don't get caught up in running into the middle of the board and using you bolter as a club !  This ain't 40K !

I hated that in 40k. I love watching a 40k player who tries a game like DSII or Stargrunt for the first time. Their shock and dismay are priceless.

Now to be clear, the fact I like games that use thought does not proclude me from being a Kid (just ask Trish) or from wanting to play with my "bright, shiny things". :;):

Hi!

As the saying goes...

...you differentiate the men from the boys by the price of their toys....

...a truer statement has yet to be uttered.... :;):

To be fair 'running up the middle in the open and using your bolter as a club' is not a tactic that will work against shooting armies in 40k anymore. 4th editions rapid fire rules make even lasguns capable of pumping out a devastating amount of firepower. To get to close combat intact, assault troops really do need to make careful use of cover or armour (tanks - not what they are wearing!).

Yes, it has gotten better, but it still is Herohammer, it still often comes down to who has the best Hand-to-hand "Cheesemaster" Leader. I sat and watched a couple of games just this Sunday. Bugs vs. Eldar and Marines vs. Guard.

Tactics did not win either game.  :L

Depends on the experience of the players I think.

40k is Star Wars, not a modern combat simulation. People want heroes leaping about with lightsabers/power weapons... but life is still a lot harder for these characters on the 40k battlefield than it use to be. 'Instant death' rules mean they will die to one good hit. Tougher to hit tables mean they get hit more often...

I've seen more than a few super-expensive-acrobatic 'jedi'  characters machine gunned into the dirt while trying to be too heroic... Or even better clubbed into the dirt by a swarm of grunts  :)
