I know what you guys mean about groups. When AT-1 / SM-1 came out, we had a small group of three players that got together very regularly.
By the time of SM-2, I was in the military and my life kept moving with new posts until I got to Beale AFB where I had a group of about 5 to 8 players that got together rather regularly. Eventually the group fell apart, James, the Eldar player, became a born-again Christian. Tom, the poor Ork player, was a refueling boom operator and was transfered off-base. The chaos player was killed in a car accident, may he rest in peace. The other Eldar player was Baker, the real road warrior, who retired from the USAF and is floating somehwere around Colorado. I was the Squat and IG player and I'm still around. Baker is the only one I still keep contact with when I can.
I was away for almost all of SM-2 / TL, but I still managed to play when I got home. The new supersized units were great. I loved juggling the infantry and crews of the MegaGargants and Imperiators around.
I missed Epic-40k while overseas studying and working. By the time I got back, it had mostly petered out. I bought some stuff and only played a handful of games until about 2001 when I got back to the Sacramento area and met a new group of guys. I never really got to know the local shop Epic-40k group although we played a few games. One of them was a huge game on a 16'x4' map with the "Allied" forces fighting against the "axis" forces across a map. It was pretty hairy.
Chern and Friar became my Epic friends and we played small games on and off (but mostly we played BFG, they're both naval nuts) until the E-A Playtest rules came out. Chern and I playtested E-A until about June when he was posted elsewhere in the state on a Summer assignment. Things have been slow since. Chern will return in another month or two.
One of my projects has been to link up the Northern California players, but it's hard work since replies can be very erratic.
So, in summation, I've mostly played with small groups that could agree on rules or peacefully work out disputes. I took it in the hsorts several times when I decided to let a dispute go because it's just a game. Most of the unruly guys who I've played with (as in the ones that couldn't work out disputes) all gravitate to 28mm 40k sooner or later. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
