In all honesty, while it sounds like a lot of folks are enjoying it, E:A lacks almost everything I got into epic for, simple rules, easy army creation and massive battles. The 3-5k Tourney system is not very appealing to me, that seems more small scale skirmish not "epic Battle". And quite frankly IMHO the army building system sucks and makes no sense whatsoever, so far I don't like much about it at all. It seems like it is a game custom built for min/maxers and not something that can be enjoyed by casual gamers.

While I do appreciate all of the help from the forum, I am going to go back to my SM2/NetEpic hole and get out of your hair! There is no need for me to look like a troll and list all of my grievances against the system. Farewell E:A players!

I empathize with you and It's definitely a change going from SM to EA. I spent many years playing SM1/SM2, left when Epic went rectangular in E40K, and then came back a decade later into EA.

While I miss the standards set by Space Marine that I played to for years, it's nice seeing a change in the fundamentals of the game that is Epic. As for min/max, SM2 had far more options for this type of thing and, if given a chance, you'll find EA a refreshing change.

While I miss the obscene amount of attack dice in SM2, I don't miss the Imperators or the "line up and shoot" mentality that was part of the game. Give EA a shot; it's nice. ;D

well, you guys are damn convincing so I picked up the book again last night and started re-reading. I am starting to get it a lot more and am having second thoughts on abandoning my e:A efforts. I am still having a lot of confusion over Formations. How do I get from an army list to a battlefield formation?

Also the main reason I am using Space Marines is because they are the only one of my armies I have fully cataloged and set up for NetEpic.

I understand your hesitancy to make the switch. After the E40k debacle, I was convinced that there would never be another version of Epic as good as SM2. I was wrong. I still probably prefer SM2/NetEpic, but E:A is an outstanding game.

I'm not sure what you mean by this question. Could you elaborate?

Each formation you buy from the army list is a formation on the tabletop.

So I buy a tactical formation, add on a Hunter and a Supreme Commander and that lot forms one formation on the table.

Then I get a thunderhawk and that's my second formation on the table.

Think of each marine compnay card in SM2 as 3 formations in Epic A as you can give each part different orders. If that makes sense.

A unit is a stand, and a formation is a group of stands that activate together. As you noticed somewhere else, a detachment plus its upgrades is a formation. That's pretty much all there is to it.

Might I ask what document you're using for your army list purposes? Because the NetEA Army List Compendium (found here) might simplify things for you. It's the bare bones list of units and what they do, and the army lists for them. PAge 4 is the basic SM list. If you find it more confusing, for the love of god, don't use it. But it might be helpful.

Also, I feel obligated to point out that Space Marines are generally conceded to work much differently in E:A than in SM2. But that's a bridge to be crossed when you reach it.
