GlynG I live in the great state of Nebraska in the good ole USA. It doesn't seem to be an Epic or FWC hotspot.

Check out the Epic player locations thread, though you may not find many people as historically E:A players have always been spread out in the US. Alternatively, consider an online game using Vassal or the new tabletop wargame simulator

As to preferences, play the rules that give you the most fun and enjoyment. The fact that the NetEpic community have been playing and refining the SM2 rules for over 10 years is as much a tribute to the vision of the game as to their tenacity. OTOH, E:A works equally well (once you have got the hang of the game's principles and basic rules Bissler ;) ).

All rulesets have strengths and weaknesses, but given where you live, I suspect the main factor will be finding an opponent and playing something that you both enjoy.

Nebraska? Not many players out there. Sgt Crunch is in Kansas, EpicBattleBaggz in Missouri and there's someone from CO that I'm drawing a blank on right now.

Adepticon is probably the closest con to you, I highly recommend it for Epic.

Bissler, I'd be interested to know what kind of rules you had to look up, it would have interesting to watch from sidelines. Mainly as I've found EA to be much more straightforward in most respects to what I remember of 2nd ed. Fewer special rules to remember and not much conflict in them. Though there are bunch of corner cases in the rules. Though again some of those have good reasons (like AA suppression).

Also what would you think if my own ruleset which is heavily influenced by EA :).

I'm sure if I had a fine fellow like yourself or other forum members with us, we'd have flown through the games and have picked it up a lot better. I'm sorry it never worked out - even with Jimmy Zimms offering excellent instant online assistance I still struggled with it - and I'm not trying to trash E:A. There were things that I really liked about the system but inevitably it's a big ask to get me to give up the game I've loved for 20 years.

Anyway, sometimes it's good to disagree - variety is the spice of life as they say!

PS @Hena: I've got a lot of things on at the moment (not least of which is my latest video battle report) but I will definitely give your rules a read when I get the chance!

Ah, sorry Hena, I completely misunderstood! Next time you're passing through Scotland let me know and you pop in to enjoy the confusion unfolding before your very eyes! ;D

As an alternative, I'd recommend contacting people in scotland
    Berkut666 - Aberdeenshire
    CaptainSenioris - Edinburgh
    MiddleMeadow - Edinburgh

Or getting down to some of the E-UK tournaments, or even getting to York / Harrogate (which is do-able by train) and getting a couple of games in with the UK regulars. Heck if you could get to London I would be only too happy to 'show you the ropes', and I am sure there are a number of others who could also oblige :).

In practice, I am sure it is the familiarity with SM2 that is the problem, because the mechanics of the two systems are different. I am sure that you would pick up the principles very quickly under either of these alternatives (which are a little more likely than Hena 'popping in' from Finland . . . :D )

And Primarch lives in Oklahoma.

I have several friends that get to Adepticon every year, but I have never been. I am going to Recruits in Lee Summit, MO in a few weeks, but that is more of a historical convention. I guess there is 40k and war machine, but I've never seen Epic there at least.

Once I get some models painted I'll give EA and FWC a try. How different is NetEpic to EA?

Hi!

I did not realize there is a convention in the region. Where is this Adepticon held? When?

Never been to Kansas, but that would be doable for a convention weekend kind of thing. Or a visit.

Heck I'd even play E:A just to meet some of you. ;) :D

Hi!

Net Epic is derived from second edition space marine. So it has more in common with that ruleset than E:A.

Mind you the "similarity" is superficial. We have changed so much of it that it doesn't really play like its progenitor anymore. The differences are many and varied. It depends on what you want from the game. I prefer Net Epic since it conserves the "flavor" of the 40k universe in its mechanics. Some don't want that level of detail for this scale. For me its the whole point of playing epic, otherwise I'd play Future War Commander.

If your desire is to get more games in, its easier to find E:A opponents, since that is the youngest version and the last one supported by GW.

As with anything hobby related, it depends on what type of experience your looking for in your epic game. :)

Adept icon is in Chicago. I don't know about the epic presence there.

If you ever fancy making the odd trip through East one Wednesday night we could help you out learning Epic:A, our club is a 10-15 min walk from Waverley station. :)

@ bissler - sorry for slow reply! I agree with you that E:A is more complex, I guess re reading my post it didn't come across that way! What I meant was SM 2 is easier, but it's complexity increase as you add abilities. However it's still not as complex as EA. so I don't take offence, I agree 100%! I just find the EA rules more flowing. But I have been away from war gaming for near 20 years and with a fresh pair of eyes I like EA because its very different from other things I have played :)

Thanks CS, that's very kind of you to offer! September is ridiculously busy for me but if the offer still stands thereafter I might well take you up on that invitation. Apart from showing me the E:A ropes, it would be a pleasure to meet someone from the forum! Would it be ok to be in touch in a month or so to try and arrange a game then?
