My opinion is that a critical hit is simply critical as opposed to normal damage, so I will not be playing chain critical hits.

It's simple - roll a D6, 1-5 normal damage, 6 = critical damage. So you are not doing 2 seperate types of damage here, it is just that the damage is critical.

The rules are quite clear that it's both:

Roll a D6 for each hit scored on a war engine. On a roll of 1-5 the target suffers normal damage and its damage capacity is reduced by 1 point. On a roll of a 6 the hit has caused critical damage; the war engine still loses one point of damage capacity, but in addition suffers a critical hit.


A critical is meant to be worse, if it were just the critical hit effect specified instead of damage you'd sometimes be really happy to get a critical.

I understand critical damage is normal damage+ not either normal or critical.

Chain Critical Hits are an intended part of the rules, and I don't see how the rules can really be read any other way. If a WE takes a point of damage, it rolls for a critical hit. Nowhere does it say that point of damage must come from enemy attacks.

It could be wandering through dangerous terrain, "hackdown" hits after combat or from BMs when broken, or even from another critical.

Like Meph said, it's yours to house rule. No one can tell you how to play your game. However, in a tourney or pickup game, you should expect to roll crits for all damage, even if the source of damage was itself a critical effect.


Incidentally, there should also be an FAQ on how damage/critical hits are checked in the end phase.

Basically, critical hit effects are only checked once per end phase. If there is resulting damage and then another critical hit, you don't do the end phase check until the following turn. So, for a gargant, you only check fires once. New fires don't get checked for spreading/extinguishing until the following end phase.
