Hi Jim
Where are you based? Still up north? Have you contacted Tiny-Tim, as I think he may well be in your area.
Also, you could try out the UK tournaments which happen roughly monthly - check out here for the events
if you can get over to Stockport there is a two day competition on Sept 24th-25th with 5 games, or if you can get down to Mansfield, there are other events there (Maelstrom Games)

Just as a reminder EUK Tournaments only allow EUK Lists. So its either Ulani or Steal Legion there. IIRC the only Tournament in the UK that allows NetEA lists or Open lists is Man of Kent Winter Warmer. But since you live in the UK I would focus on there lists since there a lack of NetEA players there I believe.

Minervans are currently considered "Approved" in NetEA. Thus they are considered a completed, tournament ready list with no significant imbalances.

In which case why are nt they an EUK approved list?

Possibly a topic that has been debated to death. But as Epic wargaming is a niche segment within a niche hobby, it does nt make sense to have 2 lots of "approved" lists.

Thanks

Three, actually. We haven't even started on EpicFR, the French version.

Ultimately, the EUK and NetEA projects have different aims. EUK is developed with the tournament scene in mind. The lists tend to be sparse on options by NetEA standards, but are easier to balance because of it. They also have a closed development cycle, in that there is a group that develops, tests, and releases the EUK lists without any outside input (aside from the playtest opponents, assumedly). This ensures a shorter development time.

NetEA tends to have more filled-out options, making it more difficult to balance overall, and also have more lists in general. It is an open development, in that anyone can start a list they see an opening for, and anyone on the boards can give input on said list. This results in a longer and somewhat more chaotic development cycle, as various people try to push the list in the direction they want.

Both approaches have their advantages, and you should feel free to use either or both sets of lists in casual play; I do. There are no differences to the core rules between the groups, they both use the 2008 Errata, which is the version you can find on the GW site. I play Steel Legion (EA), Baran (Swordwind, haven't gotten around to converting to NetEA points yet), Minervan (NetEA), and Vanaheim Air Cav (EUK) IG lists, and they are all equally enjoyable. Except the Baran. Because taking a half hour or more to garrison can be tedious. The gameplay is good though.

Thx- lacking regular opponents locally I am having to be mindful of playing new players. If I was a new player I would be happy to use any of the GW official lists. (Of the top of my head I can think of 8: 3 rulebook, 3 Swordwind and 2 White Dwarf lists - White Scars and Spped Freaks).

Going outside the GW official lists I would then look at any other lists approved for Epic tournaments. If I was a new player I would be very wary of any list that was nt tournament approved.

For example when Colin was still in Leeds and we played Epic regularly, we were both really happy to use the playtest lists such as AMTL and Minervan (for me) and Black Legion and LATD (for him). We were able to playtest all 4 of these lists, against each other and against the rulebook lists, keep notes and write up battle reports.

Not the same when playing new players. They would want to play against approved lists. For me that rules out AMTL and Minervans and means I would have to play rulebook Steel Legion (especially now am selling my rulebook Space Marine army).

I take your point that Net EA will include more filled out options and is thus harder to balance.

Yet Epic Siege and Epic Raiders are the closest thing we have to 3rd & 4th supplements (after main rulebook and Swordwind). It is a shame that the lists in Epic Siege and Epic Raiders are not in EUK approved lists.

Thanks

James

The reasons Siege aren't tournament legal is that the Mossinians aren't suitable to a tourney environment ie 2-2.5 hour games (this was admitted by the list developer and AC). We discussed Krieg at the EUK AGM (at the GT) with the attendees, and regulars who were not present, and overwhelmingly people said they did not want another siege-style list.

I can understand that. Personally I had no interest in the Mossinian list for exactly the reason you stated- I did nt see the point of another IG siege list.

But the point stands- Epic Siege and Epic Raiders are the closest thing we have to an another official supplement. And they are not considered tournie-legal. Thus I could never use them against a new opponent.

Thanks

James

EUK committee is about 4 people (?) plus people they draft to play test; EUK tournament goers number about 40ish. I honestly think it would all fall apart if they tried to tie in with NetEA who do a great job at managing "the bigger picture".

I think it's E&C who says that EUK are basically the same as NetEA but about 4 years behind.

Or about 4 years ahead if you want finished lists and completed projects

Thanks Rug and Steve for clarfications.

You are right- when I had a regular opponent the above did nt matter. It is only now it is an issue.

But as I said earlier I have a rulebook IG army to fall back on so i will have to just revert back to that.

Thanks guys

James

On a slightly different tack, has a schedule for upcoming new EUK lists been announced? I had a quick look in the Tournament sub-section but could nt see anything.

The reason I ask is that a friend mentioned he thought Tyranids was the next army list that would be tournie approved.

Thanks

James

Thanks Steve

By LaD I presume you mean Lost and the Dammed? If so will this have daemon engines in? Or is this more chaos mutants with some IG equipment?

Cheers

James
